Apple Crisp Without Butter

I'm assuming you don't just want to cut out butter but all fat? If that's the case, then you won't have a crisp because it's the fat that makes it crisp.

You can use honey or even Splenda in place of the sugar. Sugar/honey will caramelize it but the fat makes it crisp. At least that's what I believe.

I've made chocolate chip cookies using applesauce and absolutely no fat - and the cookies come out chewy but never crisp. I love the flavor of them with the applesauce but on occasion I just miss the crunchy.

Hubby used to be on a low-fat/low-cholesterol diet so I learned all new recipes to cut his fat intake down to between 10-20%.

If you are dealing with that kind of health problem, be careful re the sugar substitute for fat - hubby went from removing fat in his diet to borderline diabetic because of the sugar substitute like applesauce in place of his fat. He's now on an Atkins diet, his cholesterol numbers, high blood pressure numbers, and triglyceride numbers are all nice and low to the point where he has been able to cut all his meds way down. And his borderline diabetes is totally under control all the time.

Try mixing oats or even granola with the flour mixture. You can even toast them a little in a skillet before you mix them in.

Also: try and reduce the amount of butter the recipe requires. Your texture won't be good without a little fat, or it will turn out to be a cobbler, not a crisp. Unless, of course, that is what you want.

You could try the low-fat margerine, but it has some water in it so be prepared for it to not act like butter:). I just think applesauce will make it too 'puffy' and bland.

margarine could substitute butter but it will be oily, but with out sugar it will not thicken up and will not caramelize and don't substitute fresh apples with applesauce, so no to all
