I guess that I've always considered shopping at these places as "a charitable contribution" because I can get the items new elsewhere. I just think that its a great charity to help support so I try to do as much there as possible. But I've never claimed all the money that I put towards that on my taxes. I was told I could by someone at work but they're not an expert so i thought I would try and get a solid answer. Anyone have any insight?

Regardless of how YOU think about buying from Goodwill or the Salvation Army, the IRS doesn't think that way.

Contributions to Goodwill and the Salvation Army are deductible from income, but what you spent buying from them is not.

No, buying from isn't tax deductible - you get items for the money you pay. Donating to them can be tax deductible, but not buying from them.

no, because it is not a donation it is a purchase, you are getting product in return. A donation is just that, you give something just for the sake of giving.
