I suppose she's fortunate that she's not being executed but merely beaten. How utterly barbaric! This is one of the reasons that I am against visiting or helping nations with such rules - you won't find me visiting Sudan or Saudi Arabia or any other nation where I could be flogged for just being a westerner and not understanding the culture. In Saudi Arabia they're going to flog a rape victim for being raped. The rapists will hardly be punished at all but the victim will be flogged.

This is a cultural issue and not islamic. Now if the teacher had a pig stuffed animal and she named it Mohammad then yea i can see how she would be deserving the punishment. But it was a class student who named a teddy bear, and we know kids are innocent and we're sure the kid was either naming it either out of love for the prophet of Islam or knows someone in his life who has that named.
So yes, its a bit over the top and although Islam is brought into it, it is mostly a cultural issue. Teacher too should've been aware of the cultural norms/values there and all this could've been avoided.
Susan G,
The "rape victim" confessed to adultery. And she only came forward about her "rape" 2 months later when her husband found out about her affair. Why is that? anyways, she's lucky she didn't get death penalty for adultery. The judges went based on what the case presented as evidence from both sides. If your man was cheating on you, what would you do?

Considering that 40 lashes given to a woman of her age could very well be a death sentence, it makes sense for Islam to do something like this.
Gee, and Muslims wonder why the world doesn't trust them.

I can't believe these idiots are at it again. Half the country is named Muhammed or Mohammed, so it's a double standard issue. They just want something to fight about. It is stupid to say "It's their LAW there", because when the issue of a cartoon drawn - wasn't in their country and they wanted to fight over that too. I say we all find a way to give them humility, they need it. They cannot push us around anymore.

First of all, it's was not the teacher who named the teddy "Muhammed", it was young children, and I bet they did it out of admiration and love. Second, it's more disrespectful to the prophet to name a person "Muhammad" when a person is able to commit evil things, while a simple toy can't.
And that's what the belief they want us to think is only about "peace and love".....????

The reaction is over the top, particularly as from what I understand, it was one of the schoolkids who asked for the bear to be named Mohammed (after himself) and not her.
However, if she is going to be teaching in one of these countries - particularly as a woman - she should have been much more aware of cultural issues than she apparently was

That is the laws of their country. Another country might look at the US and say "jail time for smoking pot? Isn't this stupid?"
