Most of us start in cars that are much, much cheaper than 8 or 9k. It helps if you are well-off to start. Others can get sponsors to help defray some of the costs. My dad and my uncle now have cars that are fairly competitive, after several years of not being competitive. They got there by upgrading whatever they could, if they could afford it. They both did it without the benefit of major sponsors. I, myself, started in a $1200 car, and bought a brand new chassis after 3 years for $500 (sometimes you luck-out and find a great deal). It did need some additional tubing to make it race-ready, but it was an upgrade I could afford. I took my decent engine, my seat, my running gear, my front beam, and put them all in the new chassis. Once I added in a new rear torsion housing, made some new rear trailing arms, I had what amounted to a brand-new car, that would be worth between $4-5k, for what cost me $2k.
If you are as serious about racing as you appear to be (asking the same question in 5 or 6 different forums, hoping for a different answer), you might want to spend some time pounding the pavement trying to track down a car you CAN afford, rather than sit at your PC, hoping a free car will fall in your lap. Time is running out buddy!! Before too long, all of the cheap cars will be snatched up, and you will be stuck sitting on the sidelines watching, again.
Oh...another good place to look would be trade shows, and racing swap-meets. Right now, around here, the swap-meets and trade shows are in full swing. There's one every weekend, or every-other weekend from now till spring.
BTW....what happened to the free T-Bird???

8 or 9K is about as cheap as you will get in racing. Check out the prices of cars on the dirt circuits. I.e. any of the circuits that have Late Model or Modified or Pro Stock or even Bombers, Hobby stock whatever you want , and you will be surprised at the costs to maintain and race a car of any kind. As for your question the answer is more than likely in sponsorships of some kind.

Racing isn't the only expensive hobby. Take fishing for example. You need a boat, motor and trailer. Then there are your poles and tackle as well as time off work to pursue your hobby. Other hobbies that take $ are sky-diving, camping , personal water craft or motorcycles. Face it, relaxation costs money.
