jilly is right.
Starving sends your body in to conservation mode. Thereby holding on to fat for food reserves. Eventually you will burn the fat as starvation continues but this is not healthy or safe. I mean do anorexics look healthy?
Eating frequent small balanced meals is like keeping gas in your car. It will keep burning fuel or fat by keeping your metabolism going.

For one, it keeps you from getting too hungry and going crazy and eating things you shouldn't.
Second, it keeps your metabolism on an even keel, without overworking the system by trying to diet big meals.
Food deprivation causes your body to go into starvation mode and you won't loose weight. Eating more and making your body work efficiently is the best answer.

If your body thinks you are starving, it will sore any food you do get as fat. If you eat small meals throughout the day, it will help your metabolism stay higher. You should never use the food deprevation method.

Keeps you going :)
Plus, I do know that you're more likely to put weight on if you're not eating because your body then begins to store fat, thinking it's going into 'hybernation'.
At least, that's what I learnt at school :)
