Tell her the truth in a straightforward manner. There is a good book for kids this age called 'Where Did I Come From?', by Peter Mayle (I think). It's an older book, but still pretty good.

By the way, 5 is *not* too young. My daughter started asking at 2...

im not one for lieing to kids about how things that are natural are done especially when it comes to making and having babies. when i was pregnant, my daughter was 5, and she asked all the questions. i told her that daddy gave mommy something special (no need to go into detail there) and when his special egg met mommies egg, together they start to grow a baby in my tummy. i showed her pictures of all the different stages of a baby growing in a tummy. then when she asked how the baby will get here, i said well when its time, mommy goes into labor, and i go to the hospital and i have to push the baby out, kinda like taking a poop.... she giggled. i let her watch a baby story on TLC with me so she could have an idea. after that she was fine, she never questioned again and wasnt disturbed by it. i told her mommy was gonna be in a lot of pain and and all she said was she didnt want to be there when she was born cause she didnt wanna hear me be loud and scream....

Okay kids are curious and without being graphic just say that mommies and daddies make babies. They are going to have questions and you can tell them about things with general terms. Its never too early to develop healthy conversations about REAL things. Grow up freaks kids need to know about their bodies and good touch and bad touch and where babies come from. Tell kids the truth and they will trust you.

Umm. Daddy plants a seed in mommy and it grows into a baby? I'm not sure but I'll need to come up with something since I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old.

I never told a five year old something like that. It is not at all necessary to and they would only be unnecessarily concerned if you told them. It was sufficient to tell my sons that God puts the baby in Mommy's belly if she and Daddy love each other enough. If you do not believe in God you can substitute the word nature. Or say when Daddy and Mommy love each other enough it just happens.

This is as much as he/she needs to know and it is, hopefully in your case the truth.

However, if you are of the type that is not married or maybe not even certain who Daddy is well, then you are on your own.

Well, I read my son the part of "Superfudge", that deals with how babies are made. He was so into the book that he didnt really care about how babies are made anymore, he wanted me to start from the begining and read him the whole book. In my case distraction worked but it will come up again and when it does, my mother has this cute little birds and the bees story that she tells.

Just tell her that the baby is formed from an egg inside your tummy. It's truthful, without going into the detail, as it is difficult and I believe inappropriate to explain sex to a 5 year old.

Why not tell him/her the truth? You don't need to get too graphic or anything, but I don't understand why so many parents think that their children can't handle reality, instead making up some idiotic story about storks or some other BS. I guess it would explain why there's also so many adults that can't seem to handle reality.

I have a son who is almost one year old. When he starts to become curious about such things, he will get a straight and honest answer from his parents.

Moms have eggs inside of their bodies. Dads have sperm inside. When the dad's sperm goes by the mom's egg, inside of the mom's uterus, a baby starts to grow - just like when you plant a seed in the soil, then add water & sunshine.

This worked pretty good for my kids.

I think 5 years old is a little to young to tell them how babies are made. Now if they want to know where babies come from then just say mommies tummy. Just too young for that kind of information in my opinion.
