wouldn't you rather be wrong about god, if you knew that scientists discovered a way to create life and from this discovery eventually found a way to cure millions if not billions of people's suffering? or do you pray that you're right?

jason, indeed... i think it's amazing. sadly i think far too many people would look at this a be afraid of the implications at hand. that being, that it doesn't take god to create life.

Wrong about what? These synthetic cells would be fabulous--if they can make them work (they've been working on this for 30+ years). It's not the physical that's non-reproducible, it's the soul, as someone said. There are lots of things, such as plants that clean up waterways, already in the works. They are all wonderful!

Scientists are never going to discover a way to create life as the soul. And cures for millions of suffering people are not opposed to being right. Everyone is still going to die eventually. Even our earth is scheduled to burn up in around 1 billion years from now. Christianity offers eternal life after we die. Why prolong that event?

I don't think I have to be wrong about God to admit that something like this would be awesome! These scientists admit that they did not create life- they are just re-creating what they have found in nature. The potential for both good and bad results of a technology like this would be tremendous!

It says that scientists have discovered the way to create *synthetic* life. The word you're not paying attention to is:

synthetic = fabricated for special situations to imitate or replace usual realities. (Webster dictionary)

Don't run so fast to try to make believe that scientists found the way to create "natural and real" life. That's not what the article says.

Anyway, I respect your point of view the way you obviously are not able to respect ours. For us, believers, it's completely clear WHO gave those scientists their intelligence.

Why would we have to be wrong? I think it is amazing that science is coming up with ways to heal and it is a very exciting time for man as a whole as we start to find answers to questions. Science and religion can coexist. It is just a stubborn few that can not see that.

if science suddenly discovered a drug that stopped the effects of aging and allowed everyone to live for a thousand years, how long would it take before the quality of life would diminish to a point where it would be unbearable?

I'd say at most 150 years.

Suffering and death are inevitable.
