isn't that some kind of labeling of some sort?

I don't believe in any Supreme Being, but I don't want to be called an atheist, because to me it doesn't sound right.

You are right!
I don't believe in the Bible God, Allah, or what have you, but I am open minded to anything else that makes better sense...

A person who believes in a god of any sort is by definition a "theist". Therefore a person who does not believe in any god is "a-theist". The prefix "a" means "non". You could call yourself a "non-theist" if that term is more palatable to you, but it means exactly the same thing. I'm atheist and I'm not offended by the label whatsoever.

~~~ tango ,,, "A rose by any other name is still a rose." Accept it. This is the Symbolism of Language,,, Verbal Communication,,, Linguistics,,, Lexicography. I suspect you are hung up on The Stigma attached to it by the majority of our society and culture,,, which is made up of over 90% christian and the other 10% are a majority of Monotheists of some sort. The danger comes in Stereotyping all of us. Some of us are actually Highly Educated and well informed on the subject,,, some are as ignorant as dirt.... ~ Namaste`
So you're thinking that we should just be called people, and the theists need the label of "theist"?
Personally, I don't much care how I'm called. I'm already labelled a "man" "white" "scandinavian" "liberal" and so on... no sense getting upset over one more.
I'm proud of it!
If you take too many labels away, you decrease the whole of language.
Atheism/atheist is a word that encompasses my beliefs, by definition. The only labels that bother me are those that have negative connotations, or those intended to belittle. "Atheism" has neither of those aspects.
Why not?
Everyone gets labeled. The trick is to not let the label limit you. Not to let it force you into fitting into a mold that you don't want
Atheists dont have any control over what other people think about them or what they call them. People will call you whatever they like. Didnt you know that?
"a" from the Latin, meaning "without"
"theist" from the Latin, meaning "god(s)"
So "atheist" fits to a T, you know? A word used as a label only hurts you if it's wrong.
why doesn't it sound right to you? I know many atheist and none of them mind being called that,...wouldn't that be like a christian or muslim saying they don't want to be labled but they still consider themselves of that religion.
Labels are as empty of inherent existence like everything else. They don't bother me unless I choose to let them.
