you don't need to be in shape for Navy bootcamp, it's a complete joke. I got more exercise in middle school. I went to bootcamp in '89. I think we PT'd 4-5 times in 10 weeks.

Hi there

The first thing that you should do is consult you armed forces careers office. They have people that you can talk to who will help guide you in the right direction regarding fitness requirements for either the Navy or the Marines.

I'm currently training to join the Royal Marines so can offer you plenty of advice. It is important to work on all aspects of fitness and not just centre your efforts on one aspect. That said, you will need to get your head sorted so that you can apply yourself to your training and not give up as soon as the going gets tough.

I advise that you take things week by week and focus on aerobic endurance, strength endurance and calisthenics. Aerobic endurance is the ability to run at a high tempo for moderate duration such as 8 miles, strength endurance is about being strong for a period of time i.e. 2 mins and calisthenics is the ability to lift and pull your own body weight. A strong emphasis will be placed on the elements during the recruitment tests.

The idea is to improve week on week. If you can do 10 push this week, then you aim for 12 the next etc etc.

I have a program that can help you with this., email me. Also take a look at my blog for tips on performing these calisthenic exercises.

I hope that this helps you and wish you all the luck in your goals.

Running is good, but keep in mind they will push until you break not matter what. But better to be prepared for that before you get there! It's sounds like you have a pretty good plan started. Make sure you watch you diet as well. Good luck!

Running, push ups and sit ups are great. You'll need to
start doing pull ups too.
