YES, and so did their parents and so did theirs and so on!! And we had more respect, manners, and were more well behaved because of it. After a few spankings, all my parents had to do was say NO once and we would sit our butts down and stop immediately, we knew we couldnt get away with anything. And now, I have the best relationship possible with my parents.

And NO, I have no bad effects from it. It made me a better person. It made me a more rspectful person. Why would that effect me?? I wasnt beat,I was spanked when I deserved it. Yes i was, only very rarely when we put ourselves in danger, i have a fantastic relationship with my parents, my dad doesn't with his though because he was beaten as a child, not terribly, but hit with a belt and it has effected him, a rare smack will NOT do any harm, however, constant smacks or getting hit with belts/canes is a completely different story!
i don't agree with smacking children for no good reason or for small or minor offences i.e. small tantrums or not getting dressed as soon as their told etc. but if they run out into the road, accept food/drinks from strangers, anything that could put their lives at risk a smack is definitely a shock strong enough to stop them from doing it in the future, i have three children, my eldest, who's six has been smacked once when she ran into the road after her ball and my three-year-old son has had 1, this was for running across the road to see his nan, a car was coming and luckily was going slowly, i was so scared for him he got a smack and has NEVER done it again, my daughter also never did it again and they both know running into the road is a BIG no no!!!
so that's my views =) a rare smack - yes, being smacked with a belt/object or being smacked frequently - no
oh, can i just also clear something up, in america you say spanked but in england we say smack, it doesn't mean a beating, a smack means the same as a spank!!!! just reading some other answers and i think some people think that a smack is like being beaten!

I was smacked twice as a child and both times i deserved it and i can remember both times aswell, i think if you smack a child all the time it has no effect, when my mum smacked me i was so shocked it had an effect and i listened to what she said......because it didn't happen to me all the time i knew that i had REALLY crossed the line!

YES
most of the time was with a branch stick.
mum would always keep a branch stick with her...
the skinny branch were the worst...as they used to sting really bad...we used to cry when we get hit.
The thick big branch didnt hurt as much as the skinny ones.
Sometimes we get hit by shoe if mum didnt have stick...
Dad didnt hit us as he always was at work..
whenever he was at home and we were being naughty or noisy, he would smack us.with his hand..not with stick like mum
mum knew the branch stick were the best weapon...as when she used to hit us with hands or her show it didnt hurt us that much, and we would carry on fighting, being naughty etc
but the stick would make us stop, as we cried and then sit quietly afterwards
i dont blame her in a way..
all my brothers and sisters turned out well behaved...have manners etc...
we havent turned into physcos or crazy in any way
we would still never swear or hit our parents..non of us dont hate our parents..we get on well..
even though we had some beating, we prob kinda deserved it, as it was loads of us siblings driving mum mad.
we sometimes sneakley break the stick, but she always managed to get another one as we had 2 apple trees in the garden. She once brought a bamboo stick from the shop!!!
she wouldnt hit us now though..we all grown up and nice..
am 23 yrs old now...so it wasnt ages ages ago...
its all true...
alot of asian (indian) parents did that unfortunatley

Yes.
I should correct that...my parents spanked, not beat, my brothers and I. We are all the better for it.
My uncle used to "smack" his kids in the face, like a slap. It was humiliating and caused them to flinch whenever anyone moved their hands! Awful.
So many parents are afraid to discipline their children, and we are all SUFFERING for it, including the child!
I am all for an occassional "spank or swat" on the buttocks of a child!

Yes, also got a thick ear off the local bobby and even as an apprentice got a clip off the foreman.
My kids got a slap on the legs, but only once.
We are all normal, loving, law abiding adults.

Yes, it taught us that when our parents said no either we behaved or else. Some parents have gone overboard in the past but my generation have grown up well educated, well mannered and respectful. Can you truly say that this is what we are likely to have with the spoilt, whingeing, over-indulged noisy little brats who make shopping a nightmare today ? My hand itches to give them a slap!, however i dont but i have been known to shout very loudly at them to shut up - and they do immediately. None of their parents have ever challenged me and i have been fully supported by fellow shoppers.

Yes, by my mom, and bonnie and Helen you are wrong, You say you know people that were smacked as kids and they turned out fine? Well, they sure didn't turn out fine because they were smacked, they turned out fine DESPITE the fact that they were smacked, and I can guarantee you adults now that were smacked as children do have some residual effects caused by that type of discipline whether it be anger issues, depression, self esteem, the relationships they have with their own children, the list goes on.
As you can probably tell, I don't agree with smacking your kids. No one deserves to be hit. You can't get away with hitting another adult, why is it adults can get away with hitting their kids?
I can say that because for one it happened to me spankings and getting slapped in the face, I am 36 and I know plenty of people my age that have problems, maybe we don't directly correlate it to being spanked, but do you or have you read parenting books and magazine articles on the effects of using spanking as discipline. Google it and I guarantee you that you are wrong. Like I said, you think you turned out better because you were spanked, no you turned out ok despite the fact you were spanked.
Also spanking your kids doesn't work because it is a temporary solution for parents that are too lazy to teach their kids why their behavior is wrong.
The person who asked the question asked if your parents smacked you as a child, smacking can mean spanking or slapping in the face, which both happened to me and I am sorry but I don't think being slapped and spanked with wooden spoons helped me out any, if anything I guess you could say it has shown me not to do that to my kids' it is humiliating. Those that have given me thumbs down I can't believe people would think it is ok, every article out there proves otherwise.
