I'm fairly sure that there are some atheists who were born to atheist parents and grew up with that belief. Other people have made a conscoius decision to be atheists. All this is pretty much the same as with those who believe in God.

Hard to say, and it is probably different for all of us.

I figured it out over the space of about a week. They told me in Sunday school that God created all the plants the day before he created the Sun and stars. I knew that was BS and I got to thinking about it. A week later I knew that I was an atheist. Now I spent about two years wanting to be wrong. Finally I sat down and read the Bible and realized how horrible it was.

It didn't really feel like an active decision to me. It was more thrust upon me.

It can be if one comes to atheism from Christianity or another theistic religion. One would have to choose not to believe what one had previously believed. In my opinion, atheism in this context is a step in active searching for truth. It is the step at which the theistic philosophy and worldview is rejected. This does not necessarily mean that other worldviews and philosophies will not be considered. If thinking stops here, then it is static, the mind closes, and this worldview becomes as much a handicap as blind acceptance of God or Deity. In my humble opinion, that is....

It wasn't an active decision but i did make the decision to become an actie atheist, by which i mean challenging religion and those with "faith"

It depends on the person.
All of the Atheists I know, reached their decision after diligently studying many religions.
Many people do not believe this and choose to believe the fallacy that they must not have been "exposed" to a religion or God (always theirs BTW) or they wouldn't be Atheists at all. This is a narrow-minded view. OPEN YOUR MINDS PEOPLE!
Blessings!

It can be. If, after having considered the matter, you conclude that there isn't any evidence for the existence of god, and therefore choose not to believe in one, that could be an active decision.

For the militant minority it is an active decision. For the "couldn't care less, one way or the other" majority, it is a passive decision.
