DVD regions is a system to prevent piracy so DVDs from the US don't move to south America and so, if your DVD region is 5 and your DVD player region is 1 you are not going to be able to play it. An easy solution is to watch it on VLC (VideoLan Client), is a free video player that plays any video format in the planet (ok I'm exagerating). Download it from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. To play your DVD, go to File > Open Disc, then select the DVD tab, select "DVD drive" and click OK.

Hope it helps

There is a little symbol, usually on the back or side of the dvd player, which looks like a Globe with a number in it. "1" is USA. "2" is Japan, I think. Some DVD players are now Multi-Region or ALL region, those won't have the symbol on them at all. Also, some "region" Discs are authored in the video format native to that region - the USA & Japan uses "NTSC" and Europe and other places use "PAL". So a Region 2 Disc will be NTSC but your region 1 DVD player won't play that disc anyway. Some dvd players will convert the NTSC disc to a PAL disc or vice versa.

This Wikipedia article on Region Encoding should cover what is happening to you.

From the article:

"The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place must not play discs encoded for a different region (region 0 discs are not restricted). The purpose of this system is to allow motion picture studios to control the various aspects of a release (including content, date and, in particular, price) according to the region. In practice many DVD players are or can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs."

also...

"However, region code enforcement has been discussed as a possible violation of World Trade Organization free trade agreements or competition law."

** Edit **
To play the disc, look for a utility that allows changing/disabling the region flag. I have never had the need to do this but from the Wiki article it sounds like software is available (not sure if free or not).

The region code of DVD player can be set to match your DVD. You need to set your DVD drive to region 0, so all of the other region code DVD can play on your player.

it probably means that your disc and player are from different places and the coding does not match.
