I think religion can be a terrible thing. Most people just use it to oppress and control others. What are your views of it?

EDIT: I am a Christian but I believe that it’s more about having a personal relationship with God. Heck, Jesus himself was killed by the religious people of his day.

It seems like many of you hate all Christians. Please don't classify me with all the other people you have met. It's not nice to classify any one whether it is by race, sex, or religion. I don't hate anyone and I get along with all kinds of people even if they don't share my beliefs. I don't preach at people all the time but I will talk about it when asked.

I think that religion gives people an excuse to be intolerant and hateful towards others.
I agree with you as far as your view towards christianity. Christians should be following jesus - he never said to go join a specific church, he wanted people to imitate the loving way he lived his life. I would have no problem with christians if they all acted like that.

I am in love with Jesus and I am a Christian. I think that religion gets out of whack because people treat a religion or denomination as a God instead of focusing on the one TRUE God.

There is no difference between christianity and religion, per the definition of christianity....

Those who are christians and claim they are "not religious, I just have a personal relationship with christ", are still religious, whether they want to admit to it or not.

Since when did "religion" become a word the religious are trying to get away from? When did the whole "I'm not religious, I just have a relationship with christ" thing start up?.

I personally have no problem with religion when it's kept where it belongs...in the hearts, homes and churches of it's followers....not in the government, courthouses, public schools, national pledges or currency of those of us who don't.....

I don't hate it. It can be used for good.. you definitely see a lot of people giving to charity, helping the less fortunate, and performing great acts of kindness as a result of their religious beliefs.

But you also see the opposite. I think religion is good, if you are a good person. Religion can be used to both help people and make the world a better place, but also to justify war, violence against women, bigotry and hatred.

Ultimately, religion is what you make it.

That is WAY too broad.

There are some religious people I hate.

There are some aspects of religion I hate, such as it's anti-reason stance. (You're supposed to believe insane things just 'cause.)

I see red over the American Taliban who are trying to impose theocracy and prevent the young from being educated.

Stuff like that.

But I have known (and known of) religious people that I have no problem with. Many, probably most, religious people are generally rational and tolerant. They just have this one area where they think crazy things.

I dislike what religion does to most people.

I too am a Christian but a free thinking one, which will never get me into a position at church, but since I'm a woman, I could never be put in one anyway.

God Bless!!

At times I do, but for the most part I find religion to be harmless. The biggest problem I have is religion opens the door for and accepts extremism. We know what that leads to...

Most atheists don't hate most Christians. That is simply false.

LOVE your Question :) I think that most people use religion as a reason to behave a certain way, and its sad. There are other cults- religons that murder in the name of thier God. Its sad really, but I think it was intended that way for Gods greater purpose.

You are soooo right, its YOUR relationship with God. There are so many people who sit in church each week, and dont have that relationship with God.

Religion is now all about polotics. If you ask me the one religion that is the MOST evil is Islam. They are taught to kill all infidels in order to have virgins in heaven. I belive that you have to find in your heart what is true, worship God, and have that relationship with him. Chruch is great for fellowship, but that is not what religion is about, its about you and God! God bless you my sister!

yes and I am sure God hates religion to didn't Jesus tell the pharasies of for making their laws oppresive. God wants to know us each personaly. I agree being a christian is about knowing Jesus rather than following man made rules.

It's certainly not without its bad points.

By the way, I challenge you to find a dictionary that wouldn't classify 'a personal relationship with God' as a religion.
