The reasons are, tongue, teeth, back of throat for strep [fever and strep tend to go together], I hold my breath, or breathe through my nose. After that he will usually 'feel' the glands in the neck and the jaw. Then he will usually look in your ears. My Doc generally takes my temperature first. By ruling IN or ruling OUT certain criteria they can rule in or out bacterial or viral reasons for the fever.

he wants to look at your tonsils. if you have an infection then your tonsils with show it and the only easy way to look at them is to open your mouth...ears nose throat are all connected so he just wants to make sure it's not that that could be ill. ear infection sinus infection etc. all go with fever. and if he can find out what it is that way then why go through any other medical testing??
he did go to med school so I'm betting he knows more about medicine than you so let him do his job...

Ho could be looking for a number of things- an infection in your throat, or your tonsils. Or even at your tongue- your tongue tells alot about your health. I don't think this is out of the ordinary.

open ur mouth means he looks at your tongue to see for moist.this is to check hydration. then he checks for tonsil enlargement.that may be cause for infection leading to fever. your doctor must have done thorough physical examination.

Your glands in the back of your throat may show signs of infection that you are not aware of.
