You contact an attorney of your choice and then make arrangements up front to take care of the bill at a time convenient to both you and the attorney.

A criminal lawyer is the same as a criminal defense lawyer because in criminal law the only other lawyer is a Govt lawyer and is known as a Prosecutor lawyer.

They have some that will give you a free consultation, but if you want to use the Lawyer, most require a retainer to get things started. You can also call Legal Aide to see if you qualify for a free Lawyer, they go according to your income.

If your income is low enough, you may qualify for a public defender. Just look in the government section of the phone book and call them up to find out their requirements.

If your income is too high for PD assistance, try calling the University of Maryland's law school and asking if they have any programs where law students who may qualify to practice already can represent clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney.

Failing that, you might just have to call lawyers in the phone book until you find one that can help without a retainer.

Contact local Bar Association for a Public Defender if you can not afford an attorney...or they can help find one that will allow arrangements for later or partial payments.

Hiring a lawyer for minor legal problems can be expensive, but there are websites like LawGuru, FindLaw and other places where you can get free legal advice. I found this website useful - http://www.uelp.org/freelegal.html
