I'll be charging D batteries for a toy.

The absolute best rechargeables I have purchased (I've been using rechargeables for over 20 years) are the new Eveready Ni-MH batteries. I use only AA's, but these latest ones from Eveready have had a longer run time than any I've ever used. I would venture a guess that, if they are available in "D" size, they would be equally as good.

Just a question: Are you sure you want to purchase "D" cells? If it is for a toy, do you expect the toy to be used for many months? Rechargeables have a usable lifespan of several years. I ask, because you can get "AA" cells and "shells" that go over them to simulate a "D" cell (check the electronics section of your local WalMart). If (and when?) the toy either breaks or is no longer wanted, you can continue to use the "AA" cells in a wide variety of other devices. "AA" cells are also considerably cheaper than "D". Get an extra set so that when the batteries run down (as they would more quickly with "AA"s) you can swap them for a fresh set while you charge up the dead ones. Note: They also make "C" size shells for the "AA" batteries. I have both "C" and "D" shells that I use with my 30+ "AA" rechargeables.

I use Maha Powerex with their charger. I've tried Energizer and Duracell and they don't even come close. D cells are going to be expensive. Try www.thomasdistributing.com/rechargeable/nimh.
