Here's how it breaks down as far as which city is better:

Pollution - Both of them are about the same.

Traffic - NYC is better. A larger percentage of people take the subways everywhere here. You'll rarely have to deal with rush hour since you'll be underground during your entire commute.

Ease of getting around - NYC. Again, you can take the subway anywhere you want. Chicago has the el trains, but they're not as extensive as NYC.

Night life - Both cities have great nightlife, but again, NYC wins in this category. It has some of the best nightlife in the world.

Crime - NYC is the safest city in America. In the 1990s it really cleaned up its act and is relatively safe now.

Cost of living - Chicago. NYC is expensive! Chicago is much cheaper as far as housing goes.

Overall feel of the city - Both cities are beautiful, but NYC has more park space per capita than any other city.

Shopping - Both are great cities for shopping. Chicago has Michigan Ave and NYC has 5th Ave... although there are many other areas of the cities that are less touristy.

Economy - Both are doing quite well. I would go with NYC in this category because it is the financial capitol of America (and possibly the world).

Overall, I'd say NYC is better... BUT only slightly. I have lived in both cities and prefer Chicago over NYC (probably because Chicago is where I grew up and it will always be home to me).

Anyone that says New York is by far better really needs to book a trip to Chicago. From living in New York, I've found that Chicago isn't even on most of these peoples radars--it's like they don't even know it exists, which is unfortunate.

Wrigley Field and Fenway Park are the two best stadiums in baseball. This fact gives Chicago status, yet NYC is the financial capital of the world while Chicago is merely one of the commodity capitals of the world, a far second to London.

New York wins. It's more international, it's next to the ocean, has a bigger population, is better known, and has more attractions than Chicago.

i like NYC better only because i'm a native, but i do think Chicago has the better architecture, as well as being quintessentially American. whenever i travel out there i notice two things, that the geography is absolutely flat, and that all the tourists are fat.

Both NYC and Chicago are wonderful. NYC will always be my number one city, and Chicago is always the "second city"

With the way the Giants and Jets are playing lately, I think the Bears could pull it off.

I guess New York wins because it has more history, famous attractions, and important buildings like the Stock Exchange. I dunno. I've never been to Chicago.
