From Penn. Station, you have a few options. You can take a cab, which would probably be easiest but more expensive depending on traffic and route the cab takes.

You can also take the subway. I would suggest walking over to Broadway and catching the R train, which would take you directly to where you want to be on Canal Street. If you don't want to get out of Penn. Station, you can catch the A,C or E train to Canal Street, but you will have to walk a little bit since this lets you off around 6th Avenue.

don't bother with a taxi. it won't save much time down to Canal Street, if at all. the subway ride is quick, and if you're going to be spending all day shopping anyway, what's the hurry?

your best bet is to take any of the 8th Avenue trains to Canal Street. 8th Avenue is the western or the Madison Square Garden side of Penn Station across the street from the General Post Office, while 7th Avenue is where the Penn Plaza Office Building is. i don't know where exactly the Philly bus lets off, so just keep that in mind.

the 8th Avenue A express train will get you to Canal Street in 3 stops and will take about 10 minutes. the C and E local trains will take 5 stops and take a little longer. the Canal Street station is at the intersection of 6th Avenue (or Avenue of the Americas), and the reason you want to get off there is that you will be right at the end (or beginning) of the shopping area, which goes east on Canal from 6th. so you can basically just start from one end, walk all the way to Chinatown in 1/2 mile, and then back the same 1/2 mile to the subway without missing a thing.

happy shopping!

(PS - gopher646 is right on the money about Canal Street!)

Arriving @ Penn Station by bus, ok, 1st off Penn Station is a huge complex stretching between 7th - 8th Avenues and West 30th - West 34 Street.

The easiest way to get to Canal Street would be to walk across West 34th Street to the Broadway/6th Avenue merge and take the subway down to Canal Street. Take either the R, N, W - all 3 of these trains will leave you on the corner of Canal Street & Broadway. There is shopping on both sides of the street and in either direction on Canal Street as well as up and down Broadway. Going north(up) on Broadway will take you into SoHo for trendier stores and items.

You take the 8th ave line the A C E train to Canal from Penn station. Buy a fun pass metro card will save you money unless that is the only place your going then it will cost 2.00 each way....Cab around 10-15 dollars plus tip.....Or you can walk one block east to broadway and take the R train....But you can get the A train from inside penn station follow the signs

from penn station to canal street the cheapest way is the subway. here are the directions.

go into the subway and take the downtown number 1 train to canal street. the fare to ride the subway is $2 one-way, for each person, purchase a one day metrocard and pay only once (1 card per person please).

when at canal, you can walk west to east. all the shops are along canal street. shop 'til your hearts content.

enjoy.

Crappy shopping on Canal and cheap Chinese crap in Chinatown. Oh boy, where do I sign up? From Philly I'd sooner drive up to Peddler's Village in New Hope or the Outlet Mall in Flemington, NJ.

haha! I've never heard anyone describe Canal Street as the "shopping district"!

Wow, I hope you don't have high hopes. Canal Street is basically a dollar store set up on the sidewalks. 90% of the stuff that's sold on that street is absolute junk.

I think we all agree that you should walk over to 34th street and take the R downtown.
