For the most part, they try to do what's right (in their eyes), but they've bought into a system of reward and punishment. To them, there are only two options, Christian Heaven or Christian Hell. Yes, they hope that those that don't buy into their belief receive option number two. If they didn't, then technically they're saying that they disagree with the god they worship about who should and shouldn't be placed in either option. According to their belief, wanting those that don't believe religious doctrine to get into heaven anyway would disqualify them from option number one, so some of them may say that they want everyone to go, but they really don't. They like the two options exactly the way they are.
As for you, well, let's just say that I also have no reason to actually believe that the bible is an accurate depiction of reality. The evidence I've seen and experienced prove otherwise, so take threats of eternal damnation about as seriously as I take threats of Santa bringing me coal for Christmas.

There are "good" people and "bad" people in every group. The goal of a Christian should be to be like God and share that with others, but since we're human we screw it up a lot. We get sucked into a lot of the same traps as non-believers do - pride, greed, etc.
It IS one of the basic Christian beliefs that eventually everyone will end up in one of two "places". It's the same idea as human law - if you don't follow the rules, there are consequences. You're right. Anyone with honest and pure intentions shouldn't be threatening you, and they certainly shouldn't be wishing Hell upon you. The idea of heaven vs. hell should be presented out of concern for you, as in, "Please be careful. This road you're on is dangerous, and I would hate for you to end up in a crappy spot because of it." There is a time for the "fire and brimstone" speech, but not when a person is just asking questions. I'm sorry the people you've come across have ruined things for you.

I, for one, NEVER hope anyone goes to hell. I can completely understand your feelings about Christians; alot of them can be horrifically mean and that is not the real nature of Christianity. I don't know what is going on inside them, but I know what the Bible says. First, we are to be known by our love. Secondly, not everyone who professes to be a Christian is one. The real meaning has been watered down beyone recognition.
However, that being said, ALL Christians are not hypocritical. You might be surprised that the kindest people that you come across that you've never spoken about God with are Christian too. If you have one or more of those people you come in contact with, why not ask them? Christians are not ALL mean and I am so sorry you've come in contact with those who give the rest of us such a bad name.

It really depends on the person...
In the short time I have been on R&S Ive read some very compassionate statments from Christians directed at Atheists...
But then again I've seen some stuff where.. I thought..."OH my gosh I cant believe you said something that hurtful and that hateful..."
Years ago I had man from my church put his finger in my face and threaten me....and then said that he had a good mind to leave that church... (I am not so sure his mind was all that "good")
My statement back to him was..."Jack" if you left this church it would be like gaining 5 "good" families.
He left ...and we gained 10 good families in a few weeks...
Soooo what does that indicate....?
If you think about what the Bible says... how many times did Jesus Threaten someone with going to Hell???

Christians including myself strive to be "good people" but we all sin and come short of perfect. We are asked to be witnesses to the world and preach the gospel to everyone. I think that we sometimes feel that the only way non-believers will convert is by threatening them with Hell. We shouldn't go about it like that. I, by no means, wish Hell on anyone. I hope that all would go to Heaven but ,in reality, I know that won't happen.
"That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." John 3:15-18 KJV.

Some christians are good. But the ones you're describing think their god is stupid and won't judge them cause they're on his team. IF there was a god, it couldn't possibly be the moron these people assume it to be. Those people make me wish there was a god to rip them a new one when they die and chuck them into the pit.

If Christians really were good people, all the world would be very much impressed, and many more people from all other competing religions would want to turn into Christian.
Experience shows that there hardly are any real good people among Christians.
As for belief, you might choose to believe in the Bible as such, as you may believe in the existence of any other holy book in the World that you might want to, or definitely not want to, read or study, and so nourish your own ideas,
and you might even choose to believe in God as such, as you might find Him depicted in churches and described in all Christian and non-Christian literature of the world, and so you might have some reflecting thoughts about all that.
Real good people for you, and for me, are the good people that we may trustfully interact with in our life, those people that we, upon reflection, may find to be reasonably good unto us, unto others.
Many Christians of the sinning type, according to their own belief, upon their death will see themselves barred from entering yonder Heaven's huge holy Door and so delivered into the nasty impatient grabs of the nearby waiting servants of ferocious ever grinning Satan who will mercilessly immediately hurl them down into the ever schorching Hell's flames for their perennial damnation!

Being good can be viewed from the divine and humanistic point of view.
Humans see christians as good or bad, depending on how they perceive them.
From the divine point of view, human beings are naturally bad. God can only consider them good ( righteous is the appropriate word) , if Jesus allowed his righteousness to manifest in a christians life. It simply means that the righteousness of a man is just the righteousness given by Jesus to those who put their trust in Him. apart from Jesus Christ, God can never consider a person "good".
To conclude, true christians are considered "good" by God if He is a believer of Jesus Christ.

Judging a person by his/her beliefs is completely absurd. People can believe in whatever they wish. This does not make them a better or worse person. It is your actions that represent who you are. If you do not wish people to view you as a mean-spirited or "ugly" person, do not do actions that will cast you in that light.
Not believing in Christ is one thing, as is believing in him, but judging another human being as less of a person because of his/her beliefs will only cast a negative light on the person doing the judging.
