Retreiver or labs or mixes of these breeds are a good choice for children. You don't say how old but they should be old enough to be taught proper care of the dog and not to get knocked down by a playful one. A good choice would be to go to a shelter or rescue and get the volunteers to advise you on one that fit the personality traits you are searching for. Try petfinder.com. Unless you are an experienced dog owner, I would definitely recommend training classes for you, dog and children to bond and be consistent in the way the dog is handled. Good Luck!

What you want is what used to be the most popular family dog in the country. It has fallen out of taste in recent years. It is the most people friendly dog there is. It is the greatest dog there is with kids. It was known as the "Nanny Dog".
The American Pit Bull Terrier.
Mine love everyone and are really great with children. They let my grandson play with their ears and do anything he wants to them.
They are the sweetest dogs I have ever had.
They are not big dogs, my older one is 55 lbs. The pup looks to get about the same size, she is 5 months old and almost 30 lbs.
Do you remember "The Little Rascals" ? Petey was a Pit Bull.

Unless you want to invest TONS of time in training a dog, DO NOT get a Border Collie. This breed is VERY active and requires a job to do as well as extensive and advanced obedience training. A bored Border Collie WILL redecorate your home in ways you will not like. They can be a good family pet IF you are willing to pursue extensive training with the dog and best to pursue some kind of dog sport, such as agility, frisbee, obedience... and of course, I herd with mine, which is the best job for a BC :)

Seriously, go to the AKC.org website and research the various breeds in your size range. Pick a couple that sound like they could be a good match for your family. Then find a reputable breeder of the breeds you like and learn more from that breeder about if this breed would be good for your family and make a good addition. A really good breeder will tell you all the bad points along with the good. They will make sure you know everything in order for you to make an informed decision. The good breeder will not hesitate to tell you if their breed isn't right for you. Don't let this get you down, they really want to make sure their dogs go to forever homes. Better to know before getting a new dog if it's going to fit well with your family.

I'd vote the best dog for kids is a labrador retriever/golden retreivers. They are the greatest with kids (love them to death), my lab gets completely excited when kids around but she isn't too rough with them its like she knows she has to be gentle with them. And she is protective but not overly protective to the point that nobody can come over without having to worry about being attacked, she's protective when she needs to be. They are perfect dogs for families but can be a bit hyper.

Normally the best breeds with kids are herding breeds, especially German Shepherd, or Working breeds. Terriers are good with kids but are mostly small dogs! In my mind, you should turn this into a family outing to go to the shelter with your kids and let them pick out a dog they like. The kids will love it, they will be sure to get the right dog. When it comes to kid dogs it ain't the breed, it's the personality!!!!!

I have a miniature american eskimo, so of course i think its the best dog. When choosing my dog it took about 5 hours of internet research and thats the one i chose. He is very playful and energetic, and he always makes me smile i guess because hes so darn cute. hes a medium sized dog and hes very friendly once hes introduced to someone, but he barks if someone he doesnt like is around. hes decently protective of me not like rottweiler type protective but more of a loving protective if that makes sense. He listens very well and he was not hard to train. I think he would be a great dog for your kids but then again if you do the research and decide you dont like that breed go for whichever one you think is best.

my mother and step dad bought us a golden retriever when we were younger (she's still living!)
we breed her and got our second dog.(a boy) and they are the best dogs!! The only thing bad is the massive amounts of dog hair on the floors/clothes! (but we have three dogs and one cat) so one dog wont be so bad.

Any one you want.

All dogs protect what is theirs. Gewt a dog from any shelter or rescue and take it through a basic obedience class and WALAH a great family dog that you will all know how to train.
