Let's see.... there's CHRISTopher, and Jesus (esp. in the Hispanic community), and there's Immanuel / Emmanuel.... so... who says Christians don't do these things? Most "Christian" names are derived from their relationship to their religion.

Muslims name their children names that will honor the holy persons of their religion (Ali, Mohamed) and each name (like Western names) has a meaning. For example: Amir - wealthy, Bassem - smiling, Mohammed - praiseworthy.

For the same reason that many girls born to Catholics in South America are named Maria Angelica, or Maria something-or-other (this is so common that many women go by the second name, and you might not even know that their first name is actually Maria.) Not to mention all the boys named Jesus, as someone has already posted.

It is natural for Muslims to want to honor the founder of their faith.

For the same reason that so many Latinos name their babies Jesus. respect and a wish that the best qualities of each will grow in their precious son.

And I suspect that you'd better not be calling them non-Christians. Latinos have short fuses.

It's a tradition to name kids after prophets, and Mohammad happens to be one of the more popular prophets in Islam.

Because it is an honor and a sign of respect to name one of your sons after Muhammad(PBUH*) if you are a Muslim as it is a honor and sign of respect to name one of your sons after one of the other prophets(PBUT*) in Islam.
