1. Microwave ovens mainly heat/excite water and oil molecules.
2. Generally microwaves only penetrate aboun 1" into the food. The rest of the heating is conduction. Also, that's why it's recommended that you stir the food halfway through the cooking process.
3. You can use some aluminum foil in the microwave to prevent parts from overcooking.
4. Some people are afraid of microwave ovens because of "radiation". In reality, there is no ioning radiation, "nuking", it's all electro-magnetic wave energy - like radio waves.
5. Microwaves cook by "steaming" the food. That's why foods generaly don't brown when cooked, e.g. you can't make toast. However, you still can burn stuff if the oils become too hot, like microwave popcorn.

Microwaves cook by agitating water molecules which creates friction, and thereby heat, Some people believe wrongly that microwave ovens cause cancer. They can even be made into an IED but I shall not elaborate. Microwaves are also used in military communication systems. Overcooking with microwaves can make a bread roll as hard as a stone and therefore inedible. Enjoy! {:-)
