Hi all ok ive been studying animal management for a couple of months now and have been working in a cattery for about 7 months. I also have two gorgous cats. I have seen a parasites video today in class and its given me some facts about toxoplasmosis that i didnt know like its not curible as it goes to the brain and stays there. Im panicing really bad im 19 and want children in a couple of years but feel where i have worked in a cattery and have handled hundreds of filthy litter trays my chances are going to be pretty high of having the parasite. Im worrying that i might not be able to have children now or if i do they will get affected with the parasite ive always been worried about infertility and stuff and this has just made it sooo much worse specially as i could of avoided working with cats etc. Am i just worrying over nothing or is there some truth in this? Has anyone had children who have worked with cats without implications? sorry about spelling mistakes etc.

You are worrying way too much! Toxoplasmosis is completely treatable if its caught before it gets into the nervous system, but the treatment is kind of nasty, so doctors don't usually recommend treatment. You can be tested to see if you have this parasite, and if its present, you might decide to take the drugs to kill the parasite to make sure you cannot pass the parasite onto your baby. If you have toxoplasmosis, you can still have a baby even without treatment, but there is a very slight risk that the baby will have problems from it.

You're worrying over nothing I've had toxoplasmosis from cats for years. I had kids, nothing wrong with them.

Main problem of toxoplasmosis was it also gave me Chorioretinitis, but I only lost less than half the sight in one eye.

I believe Sebastian Coe has toxoplasmosis?

Toxoplasmosis is infection with Toxoplasma gondii. Symptoms range from none, to benign lymphadenopathy, a mononucleosis-like illness, or life-threatening CNS disease in immunocompromised people. Retinochoroiditis, seizures, and mental retardation occur in congenital infection. Diagnosis is by serologic tests, histology, or PCR. Treatment is most often with pyrimethamine plus sulfadiazine or clindamycin. Corticosteroids are administered concurrently for retinochoroiditis.

in my pregnancy book it says toxoplasmosis is only a problem if you contract it when you are pregnant.
a lot of people have it and some dont even know so i wouldnt worry.
just make sure you wear gloves when cleaning litter trays and always wash your hands after.
the cattery should make you wear gloves for health and safety anyway!
