Is there a chart available that can tell me what jobs this score will qualify me for. (Air Force/Navy)

I scored an 83 on the ASVAB, and the recruiter seemed rather excited. He said it was far above the average score, and that I'd qualify for multiple jobs in the Navy.

Sadly, I was declared to be "permanently medically disqualified" because I had cancer as a teenager.

Yes, the ASVAB is timed and you can't use a calculator. The test isn't too bad but that depends on your test taking skills and general knowledge of various subjects. I recommend getting one of these prep books
It can make a big difference in how well you do since you'll know exactly what to expect on the test. The higher your score, the more opportunities you'll have and the better jobs you can qualify for so don't take the test lightly just because some people say it's easy. There's a big difference between doing okay and doing extremely well.

The prep/study book will get you used to the timing of the test so you know how long to spend on each question and get used to the time pressure you'll be under. They give you everything you need to know to do well. Good luck!

RE:
80 on ASVAB. Is that above average or are the recruiters just trying to get me to join.?

80% is above average and like some others have said, gives you leverage. I'm a 26 year retired veteran and my recommendation is to first pick your service, then decide what you want to do. My last pitch would to be very weary of the recruiters and the wording they use to try and entice you into joining their branch of service, some will say just about anything. Some jobs don't advance so fast, some do........go for what will make you happy and research the advancement rate.

It is above average. Usmilitary.about.com has each jobs required score, however you have to go job by job. I am positive there is a chart somewhere that you can check, your recruiter will show it to you if you ask. I never asked cause I was dead set on infantry.

Andrea is an idiot. Understand that while you are in the military you are accepting the fact that your wellfare is second to mission completion, however, you have plenty of people looking out for you (Your First Sgt, Plt. Sgt, squad leader, etc.) You are expected to be tough so they take little concern in making your life easy, but at least on the Unit level you have people looking out for you.

The reason the desertion rate is so high is because for the first time in history the US military is not pursuing most deserters if they don't steal equipment or do something stupid.

Don't join if you are going to cry when they ask you to do your job, or if you are going to want to quit if they treat you like a mere tool sometimes. However, if you are man enough to get your feelings hurt, then military life is not to bad, believe me. I am a Marine Corps grunt writing this on a laptop in a government hotel.

80 is a very good score, and definitely well-above average. It means you're not one of the rocks who tries to take the ASVAB six times only to come out with a 28 or something. It's helpful in that it can be a bargaining chip you can use to get the job you want--people with great ASVAB scores have a bit more leverage to get choice jobs, as do people with any kind of college background. When I enlisted, I landed a 99 on my first try and had a couple years of college behind me, which got me my station of choice, job of choice, and an instant promotion. That said, once you're in and doing your job your ASVAB score doesn't really matter anymore. Folks will judge you based on your PT score, first and foremost, then your leadership skills and personal behavior, then your job performance last (which makes no sense to me, since that should be first... but that's how it is).

Also... don't listen to RockChic's drivel. I highly doubt she has any military experience, and sees fit to let her own personal and political leanings cloud her judgment about something she knows nothing about--and if you haven't served in the military you're hardly qualified to be talking about it, much less trying to convince people not to join. Politics have no place in the military, and certainly not in your decision to join. Not EVERYONE goes to Iraq or Afghanistan; but even if you do, it's not a bloodbath over there--contrary to what clowns like RockChic try to tell you. If anything, deployment's one of the only times most folks get to actually DO the jobs they were trained to do, as well as give them a glimpse into what the real world is like outside of the pseudo-utopian bubble most Americans live in their whole lives. You also stand to make more money during a deployment than during any other time in your military career, provided you don't blow it all away on crap when you come home like so many of the younger soldiers do. Military experience and training, as well as veterans' status, are unequivocal in the civilian sector when you get out and start looking for a job. It's how I got the job I have now, and I'm quite content--nor do I regret my military service, even if it was the most difficult period of my life. As it turns out, the most difficult times in your life can be the most rewarding... and people like RockChic--who are too afraid to step outside of their comfort zones, much less serve their country and protect others--will never understand that.

80 is right around average to a tad above it. It won't get you into a nuke program but will get you just about everything else. They really don't have an "average" score across the US as I don't think anyone has actually done the math. They compute your AFQT from your raw score in each section of the test. The 38 listed above is from a forum with no mention of where the data came from.

Your 80 is "average" in the fact that is where the "majority of folks score... especially those going after higher end jobs requiring a higher mental aptitude. This is NOT to say that lower scores or infantry are stupid by any sense.

Best way to do it is this... come up with a list of the top 5 jobs you want. Your recruiter will tell you if you qualify. Skip from one branch office to the next as they're usually in the same building or close to each other. Take a parent with you!

that 80 means you scored better than 80 percent of people who have taken the test in recent history. I;d say that's above average, wouldn't you?

your line scores determine exactly what fields you are eligible to go in to.

80 is equivalent to a 1450 on the SAT.
You are qualified for everything they have to offer based on your test score (mental capabilities).
However, if you have drug charges or other criminal history, it may exclude you from getting a job requiring a secret or top-secret clearance.
Also, some jobs like Special Forces are not guaranteed, even though they may say that.
Rangers is guaranteed, provided you pass RIP (Ranger Indoctrination Program), which is like a three-week tryout period to make sure you can pass Ranger School.
The medical jobs do not require any type of clearance (that I am aware of), the aviation jobs require secret, military police requires secret, intelligence requires either secret or top secret, and interrogator requires secret at first with ability to obtain top secret later on.
Hope that helps you a bit.

National average is 38 so yeah, your above average. I scored 87 way back when and got my choice of any field in the Marine Corps save 1.
