Uninstall it, ditch it. Both McAfee and Nortons bog down the computer. They try too hard at protecting you from viruses, it is almost like a virus. Someone else can recommend better solutions. For a free firewall, try Comondo. AVG or AVAST for a free anti virus. Spybot, Adaware, or even Windows Defender for a free spyware program. Chow

Unfortunately the 2 big names in security, Mcafee and Norton are resource hoggers and do slow the system down quite considerably, i think you have 2 options open to you, upgrade your mamory and see how much that improves things or ditch McAfee and opt for one of the free ones that others have mentioned here, i know you have probably spent a lot of cash on McAfee so you don't want to waste the money, maybe the memory upgrade will be your best option, it is not expensive and it is very simple to do. take care and good luck.

Take off McAfee or your other security program. My computer did the same thing and after a while....I thought I'd be better off risking getting a virus than having a security system that acted like a virus in itself. You can always use Norton Goback if you encounter a virus, just go back a week if your computer starts acting funny. Always works for me.

McAfee and Norton are not worth buying. There are very good anti virus programs available from the net. They work very well and are free.
But to answer your question, McAfee is doing a continuous scan in the background. This is what is slowing your system and eating up way to much of your system resources. Open the McAfee program and "stop" all back ground scans. Next you will want to stop McAfee from loading with Windows on boot up. To do this, read the following.
To control what starts with Windows:
Click Start and then Run. (Vista – Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run). In the run box, type "msconfig" without the quotes and then hit "Enter". This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click the "Startup" tab. Now remove the check mark from any and all programs that you do not want to start or "boot" with Windows. Now click apply and then click OK.
You will need to restart your system. When the system starts you will see a box stating that you used the Config. utility, put a check in "Don't show this box at startup".
That should do it.
Do not remove any check marks from your security software. You want it to load with your operating system.

I did exactly the same thing, except i downloaded it from aol on a monthly basis. The problem with some anti virus software is that it can act like a virus in itself as it seems to take up so much space. I chose to delete it from my pc and unsubscribe and now it's fine. I have yet to get a virus, even though im unprotected. but at least my pc works.

I can't agree more with you. What I did is that you have the learn how to tweak the internet security suite. They are many features that can be done to make it faster such as setting medium security rather than high security stuff.

By changing your security software to one which uses less system resources and memory, now with it running on satrt up, running auto-scanning, adds extra load to your computer, youc ould either upgrade your machine or seek an alternative security suite which will use less of your systems resources.
Disabling automatic scanning and auto-updates may also help, but not too safe for you.
