No, they don't need tetnus, but they need an antibiotic. Dogs have dirty mouths and puncture wounds are the worst kind to get because it's harder to clean and the bacteria sits down in there. It's probably getting infected.

It is best that a child get a tetnus shot anytime the skin is punctured.
Also a bite that has puntured a childs skin should be reported and be seen by a vet even if the swelling and all went down.

Since there could be staff infection yes, go to your doctor. My Boxer bit me when he got injured-not even his fault. I had to have stitches and a vaccine.....Also, do you know the dog and dog owner? You need to find out if the dog has been vaccinated for rabies.

No bite is minor when a dog is involved! Is this dog aggressive? If so, he needs training NOW to avoid further situations like the one with the child.....

never take advice for a child's health except from a pediatrician. while it's rare for a healthy dog to carry tetnus, your child should be current on that vaccine anyway. antibiotics is also often needed if the skin was broken. i wouldn't ever take chances with my child's health and a dog bite that breaks the skin needs to be seen by a dr. and i don't care what breed the dog is, that dog needs to never be around another child again. it needs training now and needs to be worked with. teeth on skin is never acceptable, no matter the breed.

Depends if your child has had a tetanus shot lately. Call up the doctor and find out. I know for adults, the shot lasts for 10 years. But if you aren't up to date, a tetanus shot is recommended for a dog bite.

Just an FYI, you can get the tetanus bacteria from more than just a rusty nail. It's an infection deep in your tissue and causes paralysis very similar to rigamortis. Talk to your doctor, if your child has not received a tetanus shot yet then he may suggest that to you.

The peditrician should be consulted. Most children are up to date on Tetnus through regular childhood vaccines, but you should check.
Although then the bite may have to be reported. Make sure the dog has proof of rabies vaccination also.....it would make the Health Dept. happy.

Most children have had tetanus vaccination along with their other childhood immunizations, but call your doctor to be sure.

Tetanus does not come just from rusty nails, it can come with any break in the skin that lets bacteria through.

You made sure, of course, that the dog who bit him has had his rabies vaccinations?? I would worry more about that than tetanus.

umm I would still call your doctor. I had that happen to me and my doctor advised me to get the human rabbies shot to be on the safe side. You don't want your child to get blood poisoning from the dog either so I would make a call to your doctor for sure.

No but you need to find out if that dog had it's rabbis shot, have that dog quarantined, just in case.
