Rescued really. Some little [[[insert whichever creative wording you like here]]] were beating the heck out of him, saying he was a witches cat and bad luck because he has a black coat. Anyway after a trip to the vets and a few days peace and quite he seemed to pick up,enough to drink some formula (only just being weened). He's been with me a couple of weeks now and seems perfectly healthy, but every single night he's been making such aweful noises, meowing, wailing,it's basically non-stop from the moment I head to bed. He's fine during the day.He has free range of the house during the day, except the bedrooms and sleeps either in the Living Room or Kitchen at night. Any suggestions on what might be the problem and how to help it?

It sounds like he's still a bit traumatized, and probably gets scared and lonely at night. I'm betting he would calm right down if he could sleep with you. If that's out of the question (my cats sleep with me at night with no problem!) then make him up a cozy little bed with a with a heating pad under a blanket set on low. Since he's so young, he probably needs comforting. And bless you for rescuing him! You're an angel!

I believe it could still be the trauma of being abused and he wants company. Another idea is that he wants to sleep in your bed during the night and when he doesn't get his way the throws fit...
So either let him sleep with you or educate him so that he will learn that your bedroom is out of range.
If it doesn't go away within a couple of weeks, I would consult a vet or a behavioral trainer (there are such people whose expertise is feline behavior :-) ).
Good luck and thumbs up for saving the poor thing!

He is probably missing his family. He's trying to get them to find him by making as much noise as he can.

Bringing him into bed with you probably won't help at first, if that's even an option, but he will eventually calm down, either way. He's probably pretty scared still from what he's gone through. Bear with him a little longer.

Good grief, what was this refugee from a cesspool thinking? The last time I checked, we weren't living in Old Salem!

I would guess, as Serena suggested, that he is still traumatized by the abuse. Give him time, and give him lots of attention when you can. He'll calm down once he starts feeling secure.

Good luck!

He may miss his mother or want to be with you. Cats are nocturnal so they are awake at night. Ask the vet. I am glad you rescued the little guy.
