Hi there we have a 12 1/2 week old black lab and lately she has been having some sort of discharge from her vagina. It started out as a off white color and it is now a brown color and it also is doing it a lot more. My vet told me before that it was vaginitis and it will go away when she goes in her first heat. But is this brown stuff normal? Should I be concerned or is this the process of having a female dog? Also how old are females when they usually go into their first heat? Thank you

First, I have never heard of this. But some things that popped out to me.

Unless you are planning to breed your dog, your dog should be neutered BEFORE her first heat. Usually at 6 months. If you vet wants you to wait until the first heat, which happends as early as 7months...that is a LONG time for your pup to have this discharge.
I am not sure how you feel about your vet, but I would definitley ask another vet for a second opinion. Discharge of any kind is not good...and "itis" of any kind is an infection. Think "bronchitis" "appendicitice" when a human get these, doctors treat asap. Its shocking that your vet wants you to wait it out.
Secondly....if you weren't planning on breeding, I am more surprised your vet hasn't told you that with every "period" your dog gets she is more suseptable to cancer, and that she she should be spayed if you are not going to breed her.
Talk to another vet, your current vet isn't stacking up.

This is not normal and you should seek a second opinion. A dog esp. the bigger ones can come into heat anywhere from 6 months to 1 1/2 years old. the bigger ones sometime later. I can't see your poor pup (dog) going through this for that long.
Unless you are planning on breeding and if so I would check into this problem as it may be hereditary ( never heard of it) and she might not be good for breeding. You may want to conider her spayed.
Good Luck and I hope everything will work out

Females are usually in the 6-12 mo. old range before their 1st heat depending on the dog. You do NOT want to allow this to go on. Personally I would get a second opinion and then do yourself and the dog a favor by having her spayed (unless she is championship, award winning quality). You will avoid costly infections, messy estrus times, unwanted puppies and reduce her risk of cancer. She'll be happier and you will too!

No it's not normal and your vet should address this! It is very irritating to her. If your vet doesn't want to help you and her find another one. Geeze it's only 12 weeks old I can't imagine this happening until she goes into a heat at 6 months old to have this resolved.
Call your vet and if he will not do anything find another one who will.

This is not normal. I just had my dog spayed at 7 mos and she never had such a thing. Go to another vet. This one apparently doesn't know what they are talking about.

You vet said to wait up to a year to treat an infection?

Try another vet. This is not normal or okay.

Find another vet. That one doesn't sound vet reliable.
