Looking for something external, especially a mood altering substance, to fill a sensation of emptiness within. Finding out that even after using such a substance you still fill lousy. Doing it again and again expecting it to work "the next time".

It's basically an outdated term that is no longer used by psychiatrists or physicians in the USA.
"Drug addiction" is now called "substance dependence."
Things like "gambling addiction" are classified as "Impulse-Control Disorders."

Something you do despite knowing it's bad for you. Something you need psychologically and/or physiologically on a regular basis.
Something you tell yourself you can give up but when it comes to the crunch, you can't. At least, not on a sustained basis.
