Here, one more time, hope it is clearer this time. I had the same troubles when I first tried installing skins for Messenger. It told me I could use Windows extraction program, which comes with a installation of Windows, but it turned out to not work that way. I finally purchased Winzip, and it worked! Yeah!
1. Open the zip files with Winzip.
Make sure Winzip is in Wizard mode. It is by far easiest when first learning how to use the utility. When Winzip is in Wizard mode, and you double click on a zipped file, the Wizard opens and will prompt you through the steps of unzipping files. Just follow each pages instructions carefully. If, for any reason, you make a mistake, don't worry, you can just start again from the same original zipped file you downloaded to your desktop.
2. Extract all the files into C:\
Make sure that, "Use folder names" is checked. If Yahoo! Messenger is installed on a different drive, substitute C:\ with the proper driver letter, prehaps it may be D:\ instead. It is usually C though, as new computers with preinstalled OSs only have one major partition which is used for both program files, system files, and personal data and multimedia files. Sometimes a small partioned, usually without a drive letter, exists for recovery purposes.
If you are unsure which drive your Yahoo! Messenger is installed on, do this:
Right click the Start button, and select Explore out of the menu. Look for Computer. Under computer is the C drive, click on it. Then see go down the list under C drive and look for Program Files. Expand Program Files and browse to the bottom of the list until you see an entry for Yahoo! Expand that entry and see if an entry for Messenger exists. If it does, your Messeneger is installed on C drive.
If you do not see this file in C drive, next look to D drive, see if it is expandible. If it is, somebody set up your computer to use D drive for Program Files and probably data and mulltimedia files. I doubt this very much though, it is most likely in C drive. If you DO locate under a different drive, use that drive letter in place of C:\ make sure you put the colon and the back slash too.
3. Click Extract on the Winzip Wizard interface.
4. Open Messenger.
5. Click on the Messenger menu
6. Select Change Skin from the list
7. Select the newly installed Skin and then click Apply. Then click OK. Your Skin will now be on Messenger.
Good luck and a very happy holiday season.
