My 2 yr. old son has had diarrhea on and off the last couple of days, and it looks alot like either dirt or coffee grounds, very gritty looking. Anyone know what might be causing this? He hasn't ate anything out of the ordinary.

The only thing that i know that causes BMs to resemble coffee grounds is stomach bleeding. I experienced that a few months back. That was one of the first questions and clues. so I would probably take him to the doctor and they should do a stomach scan and blood work. I hope I have answered your question.

That could mean that you have internal bleeding (the coffee grounds are actually coagulated blood). If this happens more than once, you should see a doctor. As gross as it is, you may need to collect some of the fecal material. Ask the doctor when you make the appointment.

Could be blood in his intestinal track... I know that with a bleeding ulcer in the stomach, people will often throw up what appears to be coffee grounds. Honestly, I'd go see a doc just in case.

Should call his doctor. Even for diarrhea existing for more than a few days. He can get severely dehydrated. Is he running a fever also?

Diarrhea should not be solid, thats the whole point, if your son has been ill for a few days he might be a little dehydrated, it happens very easilly with young children when they get sick, make sure you up his fluid intake and keep an eye on it, if it concerns you go see a doctor!

If it is black or really dark that could mean blood in the stool. Now, I'm not a doctor though so maybe you should take him to a professional. Hope everything works out for your son.

I always heard that if stool resembled coffee grinds, it could be a sign of blood in the stool. I would definitely bring this up to the family doctor immediately!
