I will be traveling by rv for the next five years or so and would like to have a dog for my traveling companion. What type of dog should I get?

I tend to like the larger breeds - golden, lab, spitz. Poodle I am a bit concerned about because of the need for grooming.

Hi, don't forget about the versatile toy poodle. Intelligent loyal and love to cuddle. Great little companion!

RVing with a dog can be a lot of fun.
The best type of dog for you to RV with one that has the type of personnatlity that you like to be around. To that end you will want to make sure that you have a well behavied dog that is good in public. You will be in close proximity and if the dog has behaviors that drive you "a little crazy" it will be magnified in a small space. Personnally I don't like yappie dogs and to live with many toy breeds would die me crazy. On the other hand experience tells me that a Newf and three Keeshonden on a class C RV made getting down the aisle a bit tight.
* Think about the type of RV you will be on. How the windows open and are screens secure if you have to leave them open, and a dog lungs at them. My folks had a keeshond escape artist once that pushed out a large sliding screens.
*Think about where you will be parked with the RV - will you be in camp grounds or parking lots? Will you be set up for extended periolds of time or moving each day. How will you allow for the dog to have Outdoors time? While you have to walk it on leash all the time? Will you take exercise pens to set up or will you tie the dog out side?
*Think about the floor plan - where in the RV do you expect that the dog will hang out.and sleep - spare bed then the size isn't as much a concern as behind the chair.
* If you will be moving about talk to your vet and make sure that you have a well stocked pet first aide kit and know how to use the things in it. What would you do for a badly cut paw if you where in a remote area over an hour form a vet - or if the dog jumped out of the RV and wrenched a shoulder.
*Enjoy some good time with a best friend.

I'm not a Level 2 yet so I can't give a thumb's up to Stina. So I wanted to post my own answer and say I wholeheartedly agree with her! Go get yourself a shelter dog, maybe Shepherd mix of some kind. I've had 2 shelter dogs and 4 strays over the past few years, and they have been WONDERFUL pets. Some people may think I'm crazy, but I completely believe a homeless dog knows when they've been rescued by you.

As far as a particular breed, I think a lot of it (not ALL, but a lot) has to do with you training the dog to adapt to traveling. I definitely would go with a dog that is out of it's puppy stage, say 2-3 years or older.

I think it's a wonderful idea to get a dog to travel with you! Our neighbors travel off and on year round in their RV with 3 (yes, 3!) Border Collie/Chow mixes. If you get anywhere near the RV, the dogs go sit by the door hoping they're going to get to go somewhere.

Good luck and have fun!

Just as a house dog it depends more on your style of living. Yes an RV is small but i knee someone who actually traveled with 2 great danes. She would jopg about 3-5 miles a day so the dogs had plenty of excercise. But if you aren't one for that type of dog something else would be better. The best thing is think of some dogs you think you would be interested in and do research on each and find hte one htat would best fit you and your lifestyle.
Good Luck and happy Traveling

I would go with an adult dog, not a puppy, as trying to housetrain and socialize a puppy could be a hassle while on the road. I'd reccommend a medium sized dog, no bigger than 40 lbs or so and something that isn't too high energy. It also depends on what kind of dogs you like-I'm a fan of long haired bigger dogs (like Aussies, German Shepherds, Flat Coated Retrievers, etc), but if I was looking for someting smaller I'd probably get a daushund or something similar. Humane societies are great places to find mixed and purebred dogs, so I'd check there first!

any dog, I agree with that, they each have their own personalities get a couple, I had a Wolf Mix and a goofy mix.(This dog had issues. I seriously think he was inbred, but loved him just the same.) Did the same with them and well my wolf mix Boomer was a Search and Rescue so he had a purpose Scooby (He looked like Scooby too only smaller)was the kids pup, the only things are, exercise, pit stops during day's travel and some sports to get them to calm down, like throwing a ball anything to get them to stretch and you, I had RV sorness for the first few days, hunched over a wheel trying to control this big thing with a bunch of other maniacs on the road that wanted to play chicken, all because they see this big rig and think woooooo lets make it flip Ethal, you get tense so a dog can help you to loosen up.
Happy traveling.

Probably a smaller breed depending on how much room you will have when you travel. Smaller dogs don't need as much space as larger ones. Have you looked at yorkies or small poodles, breeds like that. They are pretty low maintence and would be small and easy to take with you.

Chihuahua. They are small, easy to carry, take up such precious little space and would adore to spend as much time with their beloved owner as they can!
You could try a Whippet. I've heard that they make good travelling dogs and don't mind lazing about all day, watching the scenery pass by. (My whippet's not such a great traveller at the moment- she suffers from car sickness.) Greyhounds also make good couch potatoes, as they are very lazy dogs, despite having been bred and trained as race dogs. they're more than happy to sleep the day away, and eat the day away too.

What do you mean by using shuttle? Do you mean long airplane journeys? Trains? automobile journeys? Or do you purely prefer to hold it everywhere? that is not difficulty-free traveling long distance with any puppy. purely because of the fact the dogs is small, it can't make it from now on handy for them. keep that for the period of techniques. As for donning it everywhere, it incredibly is a disgusting trend trend and that i desire you recognize extra suited. i think of your suited wager would be to undertake an older dogs with some lifestyles journey and preparation. that is going to deal with that way of lifestyles extra suited. A pug could be an ok decision, so might a poodle.

It really not about breed! Go to a shelter and find a smaller dog with not a lot of hair and a mellow personality. I drove long-haul trucks for a few years and I rode with a Boston! Other drivers had Chichis, Poodles (both small sizes), Yorkies, cats, and ferrets. I even met one driver that carried a Boa Constricter! It is close quarters so don't worry about breed, find something you can spend 24/7 with!!!!!!!!
