Atheism is not a belief system in opposition to religion. Atheism is simply the lack of any belief in gods. Atheism is the way all people would view reality if religious belief was removed from the picture.

I have nothing against religious people but really dislike religion.
Hate the deception, love the deceived.

Excellent. People simply take it as an opposition because it's not their beliefs.

I like the way you worded that, however, I have found with most it isn't true, if you ever read some of the answers to religious questions on here, you would understand most atheists do hate Christians, and most Christians show the same hate towards Atheists. My view is that you can't hold a specific group responsible for others misrepresentations in the past, if that were logical people would hate all science because a scientist created the nuclear bomb, along with cruel scientific experiments in the name of humanity. It all depends on what you choose to see in any such topic. I expect several thumbs down for this answer because it is the truth. ;-)

As a former atheist I agree that is the basic idea. But, like anything sometimes it takes a life of its own Some atheists are driven to disprove religion just as some theist are driven to either prove theirs is the only true religion or that others are wrong.

You're right. As Dawkins points out, even monotheists don't believe in the other 3,800 or so gods. Atheists eliminated one more god because they agree with Laplace, "I have no need of that hypothesis." The god hypothesis doesn't help us explain anything and complicates the picture of the world. So by Occam's razor, we eliminate it.

Spot on,
Atheism is a lack of belief in any supreme being, it is not an anti-theistic stance.

"Everyone's an atheist until they adopt theistic beliefs"
Is true, but that refutes your earlier statement:
"Atheism is not a belief system in opposition to religion"
If you are atheist until you become religious, then atheism and religion are in opposition (you have to be one or the other, they are mutually exclusive, etc).

If you are about to adopt a theistic belief then you are agnostic

I like Sam Harris's definition of atheism...:
"Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs."

That is true.
I do, however, oppose religious beliefs.
Religious fanaticism is a very dangerous thing.
I consider someone who wants to teach creationism in the public schools to be a religious fanatic, by the way.
