MaryBlue, yes I know of the English translation of the Bible very well, and I disagree with it on many levels.
Read the question, then try to realise I specifically used Non-Christian examples, I am not one myself. Can you grow up and get your head around this dualist Christian vs Muslim mentality? for a moment? Unlike you, I will let you answer the question not be prejudice like youself.

Burying a woman up to her neck and then hurling stones at her head until she's dead -- ain't exactly progressive.

Islam WAS the most progressive religion towards women's rights. In a muslim household, the women held ALL the power, while the men held the power outside the household. Women were considered to be free people and were even allowed an education. They were allowed to leave the home as well, if they covered up to prevent the temptaion of adultery. In Christian households, women were considered the possessions of men. They were kept inside the house. Their ONLY purpose was to please the man and they were considered to be inferior. Islam is the most progressive religion towards women's rights because it was the first major western religion (yes, it IS a western religion, despite what the media says) that acknowledged women as equals to men.
Often, the example of the burkas is cited as a counterargument. The reason for this is simple. They must cover-up when outside to prevent temptation. The covering up is a religious thing, not an oppression thing. The only reason men are not encouraged to cover up is that, generally speaking, men come on to women, not the opposite.
I have seen the poor treatment and executions women recieve when they do not wear their burkas. This is not a punishment that strictly applies to women. Men who are seen as breaking the rules, expecially those regarding sexuality, are punished in the same fashion.

In reference to Baddius who stated in relation to the Burkas that 'The covering up is a religious thing, not an oppression thing'.
Is that why women are shot in certain Islamic countries for not wearing them?
Religions have always been about controlling and organising society to comply with a unified set of rules. That is why some rules are archaic in relation to women and their rights. In order to get the best from any religion, one must divide the social laws from the spiritual laws.
The teachings of Mohammed, Jesus, Buddha are all about love and respect without man-made rules. All major religions are spiritually progressive but their social laws can be profoundly obsolete.

if i was pushing for womens rights, i wouldn't force them to wear certain clothing, or not allow them to learn. Some Muslim women like this. which i cannot understand, but its a culture thing. the Koran was written by a man obviously. with any religion it is a way of controlling the masses.

What is your problem? You obviously have one since you're obsessed about whether women have rights in the Muslim religion.
Did you know that in the English version of Christianity, (the King James), women are not allowed to preach, that they must wear hats in Church, (in other word keep their heads covered), that they also must have their arms covered? Not ALLOWED to wear trousers in church? Oh yeah and that they should OBEY their husbands?
No? Thought not.
**Then if you know why do you keep go on about Islam as if that is the only religion that some thinks repress women***

I suppose men would say that when they use religion to control others. People must start to understand that ALL religion is man made, and much of the interruption is what man wants. We should also remember it's faith that comes from GOD, not religion

Because if you are a woman, and get gang raped, you will get punished with 200 lashes. That is very progressive.
