When you can't imagine life without it. You have to drink everyday (or whenever possible) or you find yourself drinking as a way to cope with the stress in your life. Also, alcohol becomes more important than anything else and you tend to hide how much you drink from others.

When it causes ANY problems:
1. Getting to work late.
2. Making a fool of yourself in public.
3. Suicidal thoughts.
4. Losing friends.
5. Getting involved with bad people.
6. Losing support of your family.
7. Legal problems, traffic tickets, etc.
8. Not being able to remember what you did lastnight.
9. Wanting a drink when you wake up.

I rarely drink, but used to drink a lot...this was my list.

My mother died in the late stages of alcoholism. This would have been HER list:

1. Having an epileptic grand mal seizure if you haven't had a drink in the last hour.

2. Burning 20% of your body while cooking while drunk.

3. Alienating your entire family, losing your husband, and all your friends.

4. Making other friends who are also alcoholics/drug addicts, who take advantage of your body and money when you are semi-conscious.

5. Unsuccessfully attending at least one (or 2 or 15) rehab clinics.

6. Spending the final 2 weeks of your life hallucinating and trembling with DT's before you die of cancer.

7. No money left due to drinking $40 of whiskey per day.

8. Permanent brain damage, enlarged or cirrhosed liver.

9. Other people killed for your drunken mistakes.

10. Sleeping with the whiskey bottle under your pillow.

11. Being fired from your job for drinking at work.

As you can see, the levels of "problem" are different for everyone...the big trap of alcoholism is that we all think that our problems aren't that bad, and things could always be worse. My mother stated that she would rather be DEAD than sober. She was so far into her addiction.

Man takes drink:
Drink takes drink;
Drink takes Man.
Remember this.

You're an alcoholic when...

You like to drink to get drunk. You drink to excess. (this doesn't mean 4 Long Island Ice Tea's, it means starting a night out with 12 beers and 6 shots of tequilla.) If you slam back one beer and start to feel funny, you don't have a problem. You don't take a shot with a beer chaser. Vodka is for ******* and women. A real man drinks whiskey.
Do you buy liquor a lot? Will you go to a liquor store and buy 6 bottles or so a week?
Make a list, of how many people you have hurt because of alcohol.
Do you wake up in strange places, sometimes with strange people? I woke up in a gutter once, countless other times with people I couldn't remember meeting.

I'm thinking that if you think you might have a problem, you probably do. My dad, who's an alcoholic, says that the number one sign is that you drink alone a lot as opposed to only drinking socially.

Alcohol ruins more lives and destroys more families than any other drug.

A DWI ruins a 17 year old's opportunity for a job for the rest of their lives.

If you kill someone while driving drunk, you must live with this for the rest of your life. Every money transaction including rent will be affected by your decision to drink and drive. Whether it be a DWI or a FELONY they follow you for the remainder of your life like a monkey on your back.

When you drink it more than social or just to relax a little. When you start drinking alone often. When you start drinking because of a problem or sadness. When you wake up in the morning and have a drink. When you get so drunk so often that you normally don't remember the things you have done or said.
