Some parts speak of the creation, others of raping/killing infidels, some parts of love.

How do you know which parts to take and which to put away,
without using a moral sense present in every human ?

Or is god speaking to you directly to let you know that this part is ok, this one is not ?

If the bible is all good, gods words, i pity you...your god is a nasty one - killing innocent, encouraging women to be less-than-equal with men, ...
Read the bible please.

ah..i see,,,i need to read it using the holy spirit to guide me ... except i dont believe in the holy spirit which makes it certain i will go to hell, isnt it ?
my point is - we know instinctively what is good or bad - true, some people might have a defective perception of this - but for most of us, we have it - and we dont refer to the bible for it -

in fact the bible and the coran might be the only force who can pervert this innate sense of right and wrong -

i wonder what you makes of all the believers, who for centuries, believe in adam and eve, or other symbols, that now theologians acknowledge as symbols, not to be taken literally.

maybe the holy spirit guiding hand was busy ?

No parts of either book should be taken literally.

Without studying the Bible, you walk away after reading it in total confusion. To put the parts together because God says read it, "line upon line, precept upon precept and here a little and there a little," you need a concordance. I use the Strong's Concordance.

Before ever reading the Bible ask the Holy Spirit inside of you to teach you all things which you are reading in the Word of God.

That is different for everyone. Most Christians will pick and choose which passages to icnore and which to believe. To fit to what they want. Not one christian out there can say differently. If we followed everything that is written in the bible we’d go nuts, there are way too many contradictions. I am christian and yes I do this as well. I'm perfectly happy with my relationship with God. I don't care if anyone has a problem with that.

That, my friend, is a question over which wars have been fought and people killed.

Different people/groups drawn the symbolic/literal line in different places.

No clear answer.

To those of us who are true in our faiths, He speaks to us in our hearts, and gives us His divine message. Throughout most of the Bible, you should look at it literally. There are many poems, however, and parables that include many symbolisms and allusions. These are all brought into understanding through study of the language itself and through study of past events to confirm the allusion.

Take all of those books with a big grain of salt and a lot of common sense.

Wait.... if you used common sense you would ignore them altogether.
