They had the teachings of the Apostles. Those teachings were written in various forms.
It wasn't until 325 AD that an attempt was made by Constantine to formalize The Bible and determine which scripture was "inspired of God" and which was bunk. All the things that the Apostles and their followers wrote were put before the Nicaean council and The New Testament was formed.
The New Testament was put together, not in chronological order per se, but in contextual order.

There were no Scriptures in the early Church as all the teaching was from the bishops and priests in apostolic succession who spread the Gospel by their writings and orally. The Canon of inspired writings for Christians was not assembled until the beginning of the fifth century.

Word of mouth. Those many added into the body of believers were each spreading the Gospel given to them to more people who were also then added into the body of believers. Much as evangelism continues today. The problem with only word of mouth is that the exactness of the Gospel can become distorted through the retelling and so it was needed to be written down to keep the standard to the actual Word of God.
Hope that helps.

The appostles went to the churches and taught them, then left them to take care of themselves, BUT wrote letters and sent people and visited themselves, to make sure they stayed on track.
The OT was still the LAW and still needed (as is still true) to be followed, the only thing that had changed (same still true) is the PUNISHMENT of the law.
Now they didn't have to sacrifice, because the untimate sacrifice had already come, they didn't have to die for their own sins, because Jesus took care of that, the OT law was still in use.

The apostles were around then to say the scriptures. Now God put His Word through their mouths into the Bible for us.

They didn't abandoned them. They taught them through visiting, and writing to them. Back then they didn't have worldly things to interrupt like we do today. We have more ways of being taught today and we abandoned all the ways.
