Eventually every Window's revision makes using a computer easier. USB PORTS? Plug and Play?
Just have to live thru the "shakeout" periods.

I'm running XP on our home computers as well. If XP is doing the job for us, I see no compelling reason to switch yet. XP is a solid OS that most people are familiar with. MS expected us all to rush off and buy new hardware just so we could have the new OS toy.
There's been a lot of resistance in the IT (and home computer) industry against Vista, partly due to MS's early insistance that all new PCs must be shipped with Vista and reports of upgrades from XP to Vista failing with driver problems. Many people voted with their pocket books, MS eased up on manufacturers, and now XP will be available in retail stores and online for a while longer.
I, for one, am responsible for supporting 700+ computers with the help of a couple of part time techs, and I'm not geared up to learn and support a new OS with end users who are at a pretty comfortable level of proficiency with their Windows XP computers. The transition from 2000 to XP was smooth enough because so much looked familiar. Vista has a whole new look and feel.
I've attached an article telling people who bought Vista how to downgrade their machines to XP... hmmm. And people would want to do this because?
I think Microsoft really started off with good intentions to build a better version of Windows. Then they got so enamored with the new OS they burned the bridge backward (you can hardly buy Vista and safely upgrade your Pentium IV and expect that your current software - or hardware will work as reliably). This is the biggest difference I see with past Windows releases.
Eventually, they figure, we'll all either be on Vista or decide to go back to Macs.

There is no need for Vista, when you can get something that is better for free !
Vista is nowhere near ready and not by any means impressive, especially when you consider the price.
Please take time to read my answer :
Linux Ubuntu 7.10 :
http://www.ubuntu.com/
I work with both Ubuntu and Vista, Vista has been an expensive disappointment for me and sits mainly redundant on my hard drive and I consider Ubuntu to be far superior of the two.
I will break it down in to categories and give each system a rating out of 10.
System resource friendly :
Ubuntu 10/10
Vista 4/10
Graphics (Eye Candy) :
Ubuntu 10/10
Vista 7/10
Ease of use :
Ubuntu 7/10
Vista 9/10
Software compatability :
Ubuntu 4/10 (Open Source alternatives in some cases are available) also WINE can be used.
http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb
Vista 8/10
Wireless compatability :
Ubuntu 5/10
Vista 8/10
Networking compatability :
Ubuntu 7/10
Vista 8 /10
Security :
Ubuntu 9/10
Vista 8/10
Gaming :
Ubuntu 3/10
Vista 8/10
This category sourced from various sites.
Office software :
Ubuntu 10/10 (Free)
Vista 2 /10
Price :
Ubuntu 10/10 (Free)
Vista 2/10
Overall performance :
Ubuntu 9/10
Vista 6/10
Value :
Ubuntu 8/10
Vista 2/10
It should be noted that these ratings are based on my experience working extensively with both Ubuntu and Vista.
Of the two for me Ubuntu wins hands down.

Companyies release new products primarily to make money... Its how business works...
To answer your question, do we need Vista? No, most of us don't. Until you have a reason to upgrade to Vista, then XP will be just fine for you. MS are still continuing with development of XP for some time to come

There are a few rumors about Vista:
-It's slow: not true, it's faster than XP if your computer is powerful enough. Yes it uses more resources than XP, but that doesn't make it slow.
-It's buggy: Semi-true. Yes, there are bugs but not nearly as much as there was when it came out. Vista is improving.
-Compatibility issues: Not so true, 99% of all programs will run fine on Vista.
But I wouldn't recommend Vista. If you ever change your OS, look into ubuntu linux, it's free

there is no need to install windows Vista unless you want a better looking UI (and resource consuming too)...
Win XP already has 2 SP relesed and third will come soon...
many software are not yet compatible with Vista..
so better wait till Vista SP1 is released next year ..

I have Vista on a new laptop, and I enjoy using it.
But I would not spend money upgrading another PC just to use Vista.

I have been on a machine w/Vista,personally I think it's a bigger profit for Microsoft then anything.Seems to me it's more congested,it just gives you more ways to do the same thing. Not to mention the compatibility issues w/hardware and software.
