My personal opinion is that they have problems of their own and want someone to let out their frustrations on. I really would like to know how many non-smokers TRULY BELIEVE they'll get cancer from having to walk past a smoker to get into the mall/grocery store/movie theater/restaurant/ etc. Honestly, I think the vast majority of them don't like walking past us simply because smoke smells bad--they know deep down in their tiny black hearts that there's no effing way they're going to die of cancer from spending a few seconds in some second hand smoke. If they were so concerned for their health, they'd walk around with a gas mask on to avoid the pollution of factories, automobiles, semi-trucks, charcoal grills, etc. There are FAR worse things in our environment that cause cancer. The only people, imho, who are allowed to complain about second hand smoke are those who are forced (as a non-smoker) to live with a smoker who refuses to smoke outside, and people with lung conditions (asthma, chronic bronchitis, etc.).

Totally agree with you. I hate it when people come up to and treat you like you don't know it's bad for you. My biggest complaint though is the people that like to complain when you're sitting in the smoke pit minding your own business and they walk by and get a big whiff. I'm so d**ned tired of people riding my case about smoking. I enjoy it, it helps me relax. My theory is that if you don't like people smoking, then don't go around them. They have the right to smoke just like you have the right to complain. The smokers usually don't make a scene when you start complaining so please don't make a scene when we light up.
Now as far as the "fat people" go, I understand that some people can't help it medically, but when you go to McDonald's and order 3 Big Mac's, an extra large fry, and a super sized soda, you really need to slow down on the food. Try a cigarette to curb your appetite. It'll help you stay thin.

It's true, and it drives me up the wall.
My mother hates cigarettes more than anything. When we pass the smoking area outside of the mall, she will always hold her nose, complain loudly to my little sisters/dad/her friends about the smoke, and throw dirty looks at the people trying to relax and enjoy their cigarettes. It's embarassing.
It turns out that my grandfather died of lung cancer, and my mom had a very hard childhood. She sees it as her duty to let everyone know how horrible smoking is because she thinks it ruined her childhood. Or it's just because she's an opinionated ***** who has to be right all the time.
I seriously wish people would stop doing that, though.

I generally don't say anything about people smoking, unless the smoke effects me directly. I resent having to pass through clouds of smoke, going into or out of, stores and restaurants. I have breathing problems as it is, never mind having to inhale 2nd hand smoke... I can't go without breathing, but these folks, certainly can go without smoking, in places where others "have" to pass by... stand further from the doorways..
ohh and Brevejunkie.. it's not just cancer, it's many other things.... severe asthma, emphasymea... breathing the crap from second hand smoke, can trigger severe reactions...

Because non-smokers, especially non-smokers who are former smokers are mad that other people can smoke. It's a weird thing. When I quit for like 4 months I hated smokers. I talked so much smack about them - told my smoking friends to stay away from me because they were stinky, etc. It was all because 1) I was jealous they were able to smoke and 2) I didn't want to start again by seeing others enjoy it.

Even if you aren't smoking in someone's face dear, the smoke still circulates around.
Perhaps people are astounded that an attractive, normally intelligent person would allow themselves to get hooked on smoking. And in fact, smoking is a deadly expensive and stinky-dirty habit.
You know this - and that's why you're prickly about it.
So since you're bound and determined to make a point about it - be prepared for the kind of attention you may not want.
And again, you personally know that smoking is gross. So stop trying to justify your habits.

People feel the need to comment about anything that is considered negative or harmful-especially when it is an obvious question of people CHOOSING to do things that are negative or harmful. You are sensitive to the smoking issue because it relates directly to you. Do you honestly feel that the same fat people you referred to don't get comments all the time? And as a medical student that really irks me because not all fat people eat excessively. Most of them do, but not all of them. If your thyroid suddenly stopped working properly and slowed down, you'd be fat too! Believe it. If you choose to smoke, knowing all of the harmful effects and the expense involved, then do so. Just don't do it around people who don't like it and/or shouldn't be exposed to it-like babies, pregnant women, asthmatics... you know the drill. I can't count the number of times I was exposed to smoke that I didn't want to inhale. Have a good one.

Because it has become more "Acceptable" to be severely obese then to smoke in this society. What i really would like to know is, When did smoking become illegal? I buy my smokes in a store, and then i can't smoke ANYWHERE! I have no problem going outside if people can't stand it, but when i drink. I do NOT want to go outside just to get a smoke!

Its because everyone knows someone who perhaps died needlessly or suffered as a result. I had a sister who had emphezema and she thought just like you, she is dead now. Her entire end of her life had to be lived within the confines of her oxygen cord of twenty feet, and do not ask how hard it was to see her suffocate slowly. My mother died of lung cancer, my best friend died last year from it as well, I have asthmas and dont smoke but I used to. Thank God I quit but I remember I quit after someone who was not even close to me one day heard my smokers cough and said do you have a death wish? It hit home and I quit. Are you so blind not to see why people care enough about you to say something?

They feel morally superior, if it is not your mom or a Doctor, this "advice" should be kept to themselves. Etiquette is when you try to make someone comfortable and at ease, not point out flaws or try to embarrass them. You would not comment on an overweight persons eating habits because you have "Manners".
