I mean, it really doesn't offer that much does it? No heaven, no living for ever, no meeting up with dead loved ones "on the other side." No festivals to enjoy, no special someone in the sky to talk to and love them. I mean, there are no cozy parts to it, but it is spreading in popularity. Why do you think this might be?? Seriously?

For one thing, people are more educated than before. Just a few decades ago, it was not uncommon for people to go to school just long enough to read and write. Especially females, who often dropped out to get married and raise a family. Now in the 21st century, we have put more emphasis on formal education. People are more educated, aware of their surroundings, and many don't just follow by blind faith anymore as they used to.

Considering that the US was founded on the basis of religious freedom, the first few citizens of the US attended their church regularly, seeing as how there was very little else to do other than work, and it was expected of them. As we evolved as a country, denominations split apart, new religions and churches were formed. Over the years, more people finished school, became educated, and formed opinions of their own, especially once they left their "home" communities. Of course, as people stopped attending church, they in turn, stopped taking their children as well. Many of today's children have never even been inside a church.

One of the reasons more people are professing to be atheist is because of what you typed in your question. "Festivals to enjoy? special someone in the sky to talk to?" I've been to church many times before and was appalled at the "socializing" that goes on. People put on their best clothing to allegedly worship God and/or Jesus or their favorite diety. They're simply dressing to show off. If there was a God, do you think he'd care how people dressed? What happed to "sackcloth and ashes" that is mentioned in the bible? And speaking of dead loved ones, I have a couple dead relatives I never, ever want to see again. If there really is a heaven, and I go there when I die, if I see my pervert grandpa there, I'm spitting in his eye and turning around and going to hell.

The younger generations in most countries are getting better educated. They begin to ask questions, They get answers and are intelligent enough to weed out the garbage from the truth.
Sure, reality is grim. No afterlife in a lovely heaven. I can cope with that. Festivals? Oh I can and do enjoy festivals but religion does not play any part at all.
Atheism is spreading because it is the only logical choice. Any religion is based upon a man-made entity that isn't there. Simple, really.

People are getting smarter and smarter as the centuries pass and as science progresses. Therefore, they realize that people are just the most advanced of the great apes and that there is nothing to life other than what you can see around you. So there is no reason to believe in the silly folklore and myths that ancient man invented to keep his fear at bay, back when they were huddled around fires and scared of the eyes peering at them from the darkness. Besides, who wants to believe in a person who sets certain rules and standards. We all know that everything is relative and there are no standards. People need to be free and not inhibited by some ancient system of beliefs. As they said years ago, "Do your own thing!"

Of course, I'm a dedicated Christian and don't believe any of this, but this was how I thought when I was an atheist.

"t really doesn't offer that much does it"

Yes, you SHOULD prefer the illusions of religion. Sure. Education levels are rising the world over and with it come questions that the ancient religions have no good answers to. Eventually people will see it for the superstitious nonsense it is.

And regarding atheism offering nothing, that is because it isn't an organisation or club. It is just a lack of belief in gods. If you want a party, by all means, throw one.

People believe what makes sense for them to believe. You can't bribe someone into belief. If I say to you: Look at the sky and when you truly believe it is red, I'll deposit $1 billion in your bank account. Now not believing that offers no reward of course, but you know the sky is blue, and you have every reason to think I'm a loon. So a) You can't choose to believe what I suggest to you and b) Since you don't believe me, my promise doesn't sway you either.

Atheism gave me freedom of choice and it gave me something that no religion does - a sense of responsibility. Only now that I've come to terms with the brutal truth, i.e. that there is no God, have I realised what a great task in this world I have. I have to make choices and I have to live with them. Big difference if you ask me.

Well I don;t see it a a popular thing, however it was since recently that Christian crusader started with the prayer in schools, ten commandments on court houses, and trying to pass creationism as science and well we just got fed up with it.
