He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge —
no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

Many of the psalms are very lovely on their own as poetry/prose. I suppose for me, although I definitely don't agree with teaching RELIGION in the schools, I do wish that things like the Psalms, the Song of Solomon, and other passages could be taught from the standpoint of poetry. I hope we eventually come to the point that we can treat the Torah/Bible as literature, just as we treat the various ancient mythologies as literature, so that people can learn from it in a literary and historical sense.

It's good that you love Psalm 91, for I love Psalm 91 too and I can testify how it brought comfort to my heart knowing I'm protected. I also learn that Pastor Joel Osteen's mother used to recite the last verse "With long life I will satisfy him, and show him my salvation" when she was suffering from cancer. She confessed a few other verses on healing and health, and eventually God honoured His words and her faith by healing her of the cancer.

I would describe my view as more Agnostic than Atheist... my view of books like the Bible, Koran... is that rather than the divinely inspired word of God... they are the collected wisdom of the time and offer good advice... [not perfect advice]
An example of imperfect "advice" would be the Biblical position on slavery...
if you find that passage from Psalms comforting, I say good for you. Where ever one finds comfort that is not self destructive that is a good thing.

Sorry, it would be meaningful to me only in the case that there was a deity to back it up. I'm glad it comforts you but there are many other real things in life, most notable family and friends that can offer tangible comfort, especially if we let them.
To me, this just reinforces the "persecution complex" of these faiths.

Sorry But you are not an atheist.
You may not believe in the judgmental punishing small g god that religion talks about but deep down in your heart you do believe in the real God.

I agree with you.
It is one of the most comforting passages of the bible.
I'm glad that there are Atheists that don't think the bible is a total waste, there are many good things in the book, no matter what the personal or spiritual belief.
Blessings!!

I am a Pantheist and I only really appreciate Solomons judgement of the child with two mothers.
I think that is a great fable regardless of religous perspective.

Doesn't do anything for me I'm afraid. Then again, I know a few things about natural disasters and plagues and how it seems to hit both the religious and the nonreligious equally hard.
Did you have a religious upbringing?
