A .410 is just that, .41". A 12 gauge is a .73 caliber shell, capable of much higher capacity, and in more recent years, also capable of using higher pressure 3.5" long shells. The 12 is far more powerful, capable of up to about 3500 ft/lbs of energy, while the .410 can muster up about 800 ft/lbs or so.

The power of a shotgun is a function of the size of the projectile and the amount of powder. Both of these are more or less a function of the diameter of the shell. In the case of the .410, the diameter is expressed in inches. In the case of the 12 gauge, it is expressed in "gauges", which is basically the inverse of the weight in pounds of the lead slug (actually it's the number of lead balls of a particular diameter that equal one pound - probably the most ***-backwards way of measuring ever devised). The 12 gauge thus has a diameter of about .73 inches, much larger than the .410. (A 20 gauge is 0.6 inches in diameter).

DONT BUST HIS CHOPS!!!!!! Everybody has to start somewhere! I can guarantee you weren't born with the knowledge to answer to this question.

Many kids grow up using the .410 due to the fact that it kicks a whole lot less than the 12 gauge.

Unfortunately, now the ammo is very expensive for the .410 so it is not a cost effective option for kids anymore.

Also, if you ever get into trap or skeet shooting, you will find that only EXTREME experts use the .410 effectively!

Cheers!!!!

Seems no one has mentioned that a single pellet from a 3" 410 and a single pellet from a 2 3/4" 12ga (both game loads or even target loads) is actually very very very close to oneanother in their energy.
A 410 is only limited to close range because of it's pattern density, NOT POWER

As others have already said, the 12 gauge is more powerful than a .410. Don't be afraid to ask questions. That is how we all learn.
