Your question is too imprecise to give a definitive answer. For example, what type of output do you have and on what type of player?

best case scenario ...you have an optical (square jack) or digital coaxial (orange RCA jack) or HDMI output (See link for pictures. I assume since you say "only one" that you don't have multichannel analog outputs .. typically 6 RCA jacks) on a DVD player. If any of these three you would simply use a suitable cable to connect to the analogous inut on your surround sound system (which I have to assume is a receiver and speakers).

If you only have a single analog audio jack (which would be VERY unusual) you would be out of luck since this would only give a mono signal. If you had dual (usually red and white) jacks you have a stereo signal and this generate a form of surround using matrix decoding of the stereo (e,g. Dolby ProLogic).

Sorry .. can't give you more advice without details.

A DVD player typically only has 1 RCA output called 'coaxial digital'.

This one output can carry 6 channels worth of sound.

Look on the back of your "home theater" receiver. Some of the jacks should say "DVD". It can be:

- A RCA Female jack
- A square plug for an optical cable

You run a video cable from the DVD players single "coaxial digital" output to the RCA Female jack on the receiver.

Presto - 5.1 channels of sound with 1 wire.
