This morning I was relaxing on the couch sipping my coffee when I heard this heaving sound coming from the kitchen, it was King (my kitten) and he was by his food dish. My first thought was 'Oh God, my kitten is choking!' but he didn't seem to be scared or uncomfortable. Then he stopped and it was business as usual for him. I picked him up and squeezed him and kissed him, I don't know what I would have done had something tragic happened.

Have any of you experienced this? Is this a regular cat sound or condition? I am hoping he is just having trouble coughing up a furball. Should I take him to the vet? Any and all responses are so very much appreciated. :(

I have owned cats all my life & the sound you are describing is is a furball cough. There are remedies in the pet shops & at vets but a simple home remedy is to add a drop of cod liver oil to his food once a week or when he is displaying problems again.I have always owned himalayans or persians so they tend to get furballs often. Make sure that you have plenty of water for King to drink that helps too. Hope this helps

I was just about to post this question myself! this morning my 3 month old kitten also made that heaving cough sound twice (first time i've ever heard him do it) also ran straight to him and cuddled him and he seemed to be fine and carried on running around playing being his usual self? I had to leave him so I could come to work this morning and I'm still worried about my little baby at home at the moment! I hope it was also just a case of a hairball cough!

One of my four cats does this all the time. I aske my vet and they said it was hairballs. Now this cat typically poops them out but I now give him and the others a hairball med regularlly and this has seemed to help a great deal.

Probably a fur-ball, or it could be that he just ate his food to quick, make sure he plenty of fresh water. Cats often make that sound, its just clearing their throat.

Yep - it's a hairball. They'll probably be a pool of sick/hair around somewhere!
