Sleep has often been referred to as,"the cousin of death". And although a sleeping person is clearly not dead, they cannot hear, see and their movement is often deathly still.

I have no interest in aurguing with people about why they reject faith. But a person answered my question with contempt about the "Burning Bush". So for those that are interested I offer this from the translation of the Arabic text of the final revealation; I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the Rejected, 144. (Allah) said: " O Musa (Moses) I have chosen you above men by My Messages, and by speaking ( to you). So hold that which I have given you and be of the grateful." -the Noble Qur'an-surah 7. Al-A'raf

No, I know they can! Why would they be able to hear and feel but not respond? I think it's funny when people use the bible to show proof of things. If you want to go that route when Jesus died and then appeared to his apostles he was a ghost! And when he spoke wasn't he responding to them? What about the burning bush in the bible ? Is it easier for you to think a bush talked, then to think a spirit was responding? Please, the bible is a series of books, written at different time periods, from different people. It contradicts itself in many places. It's like writing a book after you played the telephone game for hundreds of years. It also has a great many metaphysical and paranormal things in it .

According to the Bible, the dead are sleeping. They don't hear, smell, see, feel, taste, or speak. They are just dead. They don't go to heaven or become ghost. They are sleeping. Here is some proof.
Ecclesiates 9:5 - "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all."
Psalms 146:4 - "His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish"
Isaiah 26:14 - "They are dead; they will not live. Impotent in death, they will not rise up" (they don't be like ghost)
How do we know that they don't AUTOMATCALLY go to heaven?
Acts 2: 29, 34: King David did not go to heaven (Well, if he didn't go to heaven, where did he go?) Genesis 3:19 says, "you will return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust youwill return." (Like I said in the above, David just cease to exist)
John 3:13: Here jesus himself says that he went into heaven and he saw noone from the Earth, to heaven only Him who came down from heaven - which is Jesus.
But that is not the end. God says that those who obeys him in the end will gain everlasting life. In other words, for the dead they are just dead, until Jehova comes in Armageddon, destroys all who are wicked, and then he will ressurect those who have died. (Revelations 21:4)
If I didn't answer your question, let me know!

The saints in heaven cannot respond directly to us but they can respond to God.
Catholics share the belief in the Communion of Saints with many other Christians, including the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopal, and Methodist Churches.
The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.
Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints, you, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.
As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends living here on earth to pray for you. Or, you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother living in heaven to pray for you.
Prayer to saints in heaven is simple communication, not worship.
Asking others to pray for you whether your loved ones on Earth or your loved ones in heaven is always optional.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 946 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p5.htm#946
With love in Christ.

From past experiences, there are residuals, who does their own thing and has no idea you are there, and there are ghosts that can actually interact with you.
I personally believe that when someone passes, they are in another realm. I have seen a few spooks in my mother's house, that have actually touched me.
So, I do believe they can hear, feel, and touch. But, I think they can respond in their own way...

No. Why don't you take a moment to read Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10. That will explain why.
