It would probably have meant that muslims would have become a official minority religion and thus falling under special facilities, which would have created more trouble.

I totally understand your question...
You've actually partly answered it yourself...
I don't think it would be any better off as a Hindu Nation either, even though that seems like a viable and better option.
India is not the same as Hindustan, or Bharath.
India has grown far beyond those concepts now. We are a country of some 40 or more religions, and within the majority Hindu itself, we've got so many different sub divisions, that unity is something we can never aspire for.
We are a country of diversity, and even though several governments and parties are turning pro-saffron in the recent times, there can never ever exist a purely Hindu Nation within the country that is presently known as India. The only option would be to carve out a separate country for that...
Ha ha! and that would be Pakistan revisited...
Guess what It'll be called...
Pavitra Bhoomi is my take...
Lol!

It sounds like you are asking would India be better if Hindu was the official religion for all. I suppose some of the higher castes would prefer that.

Religion should be voluntary, not coerced. Those who want to follow a religion have a right to do so, but religious beliefs and rules should never be forced on anyone. Secular laws can cover all of the important "protect us from each other" things, but religions often impose all sorts of outrageous rules, such as how to dress, what to eat, that one must pray, and how, and when, etc.

When people believe they're doing some god's work, they often use those beliefs to justify imposing excessive limitations on personal liberties, and the most vile penalties. For people to be truly free, religion must be kept out of government. Always. Everywhere.
