I am a devout Christian, along with being a humanist. Yet, many Christians tell me these are mutually exclusive. How do you figure, when being a humanist simply means being concerned with the welfare of people and humanity overall? To me, that's the very definition of Jesus Christ Himself.
So, how can you truly be a Christian, without being a humanist as well?

Tropicalwolf... I do not listen to others, which is why I will always be a devout humanist, as that is at the heart, what a Christian truly is.

I was raised Catholic, but soon after 13 years of Catholic schooling... I gave up on it all. I was so sick of having it jammed down my throat. So I claimed I was Athiest for a while. But now I am a Humanist. Humanists don't beleive in God. Humanists beleive in the good in people and living a moral life. So yes, they kind of do contradict each other slightly.

My purpose is best described as focusing on Jesus, and thereby living in the Spirit. That's the way to know what God's will is: Through the Spirit of God.
My focus is not on being a Humanist. That would be placing my focus on something else. I don't want that. I want the will of God.
You see, I was brought up by God to understand Him more and more each day. There are a lot of things that I might do in a day that might make me seem to be a Humanist. But that's not what I am about. I am about doing the will of God through His Spirit, and for some my words bring life, and to others, death.
So it is good that you want to do good, but all other things that take the focus off of Christ may eventually lead to error. On the surface, what you say seems right, just, and good. But in the spiritual sense, it is focusing on human need over the trust in God. In that, we may be getting out of focus with the God of our desires.

Go to the Humanists Web site where you will find this statement
Humanism is a response to the widespread demand for an alternative to dogmatic religion. The world’s major religions claim to be based on revelations fixed for all time, and many seek to impose their world-views on all of humanity. Humanism recognizes that reliable knowledge of the world and ourselves arises through a continuing process of observation, evaluation and revision.
So humanism is an alternative to religion - by their own definition you cannot be both Humanist and Christian - they dont want you.

It sounds like the word humanist implies that the welfare of people and humanity is the most important thing to you. As a christian your faith should be the most important thing to you. Caring about people goes along with being a christian, but it's not the most important part.

Humanity? Have not you read the punishments imposed, war rules implemented in OT? When the GOD himself is so strict and orders hard punishments, how as a follower you call your self a Humanist? I furnish few teaching/commands of GOD of OT for your ready reference and there are many more.
PUNISHMENT FOR COLLECTING WOOD
When the Israelites were in the wilderness they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and to the whole community. They put him in custody, because there was no clear instruction about what should be done to him. 15:35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must surely be put to death; the whole community must stonehim with stones outside the camp.” So the whole community took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, just as the Lord commanded Moses.
RULES OF BATTLE
You must by all means destroy 3 all the places where the nations you are about to dispossess worship their gods – on the high mountains and hills and under every leafy tree. You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars, burn up their sacred Asherah poles, and cut down the images of their gods; you must eliminate their very memory from that place
The LORD your God will deliver it over to you and you must kill every single male by the sword. However, the women, little children, cattle, and anything else in the city – all its plunder – you may take for yourselves as spoil. You may take from your enemies the plunder that the LORD your God has given you. This is how you are to deal with all those cities located far from you, those that do not belong to these nearby nations.
Now therefore kill every boy, and kill every woman who has had sexual intercourse with a man. But all the young women who have not had sexual intercourse with a man will be yours.
I Solemnly affirm, confirm and belive that only JESUS CHRIST is the representative for true Sacrifice, Humanity and Love. If you follow him only you will be called a Humanist not the teachings of Violance and cruality.

No, poor misguided person, humanist does NOT mean being concerned with the welfare of people and humanity overall. Humanism is the ideal that mankind is born 'perfect' that everything about him is OK. it is only when society screws him up that things get off track. things like, RELIGION, education, family and work. that the solution is a government policy much like Communism, that keeps everything in balance. You might want to learn a bit more about what you want to be known as.

Jesus is probably the most famous Humanist the world has ever heard of, most organized religions are self serving power groups. Down through the ages they have slaughtered millions!!! All in the name of Jesus or trinity or what ever. Completely opposite, Jesus said you cannot serve two masters

Your a devout what?
You cant be devoted to "CHRIST" and to man.
His teachings include, "I tell you the truth unless you H AT E your mother, father, sister, brother... even you self, you can not be my disciple."
But yes, feed the hungry, clothe the ...
But if these things divert you from your first love and being obedient to him, which may include "NOT DOING THINGS YOU THINK ARE GOOD CHRISTIAN THINGS TO DO" you may find yourself one day saying, "But Lord, I helped a lot of people. I was a real humanist, like you." and the reply will come...
