Like the movie, "Bloodsport" starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. I'm wondering if there could have been one in Hong Kong, Beijing or another martial arts-esque place.

There used to be an annual, all style tournament that was held in Thailand in the 60s and 70s that restricted entry to only those they deemed qualified. Among other things you had to be Asian and a fighter of some note to enter and one of the first years that they deviated from this an American service member entered and was injured and the military published a directive stating no more fighting in local type contests and tournaments in Thailand. This of course was all during the height of Vietnam. From what I recall reading about it there had been one or two deaths in this tournament over the years and the tournament had been held since the late 1950s and fighters getting hurt was not uncommon. Of course Hollywood, as it tends to do, made this seem much larger-than-life with their movie Bloodsport.

"i doubt the people who fight would be very good"> Whomever said that has obviously NEVER fought in ANY kind of tournament; martial arts, kumite, or other kind. Only the best are allowed to even apply to be in a Kumite tournament, and only the best of those applicants are accepted. So, unless you have the proven training and martial arts skills to know what you are talking about I suggest you remain silent.

There have been underground fights for ages, but nothing like in the movie Bloodsport. Even the best arranged were nowhere near that. I used to fight in underground / illegal, full contact fights. They were nothing like that movie portrayed them to be.
