If you join the German ADAC as a European member, you pay about £50 for full roadside and breakdown cover in the UK. You do NOT have to be in Germany to do this! We have been members for about three years and on the two occasions we have called them out, it's the AA which has responded as ADAC's UK partner.

NOT THE AA. Three hours to get to me and I was in the city centre. Absolute joke!. Try Swinton Insurance Brokers, they have a breakdown service where they use local garages instead of sending mechanics from a depot. I got full UK coverage for £42 from them and was picked up in 15 minutes when I called . Call 01236 729542 to arrange.

Would have to say A.A. Have called them out three times in the U.K. over the last 15 years or so, and response times have always been well within the hour with A.A. vehicles and fitters.
I pay extra for European cover, as I regularly drive there, and after I don't know how many years without incident, I've had to call them out twice this year in Holland and each time the A.N.W.B. (who have an agreement apparently with the A.A.) has attended again within the hour.
An acquaintance of mine, on the other hand, is a member of the R.A.C., and although his one call out in the U.K. was within the hour, (by a local garage, not an R.A.C. vehicle), his experience in Europe was totally different.
Like me he regularly drives in Europe and has R.A.C. European cover, and again like me, he has had to call twice for assistance. The first time the response was within the hour by an independent garage, but ------------- the second time was a nightmare. His vehicle was only 5 days old, but could not be repaired, and had to be shipped back to the U.K. 'piggy back'. This too was attended by an independant garage, but, despite several calls to R.A.C. European control who promised to 'sort it out' it was left up to my aquaintance to source his taxi to get him from his hotel to the garage which was transporting him and his car to the ferry. This took up over FIVE HOURS of what should have been 'shopping time' before his return to the U.K.
This is of course only my experience. Other people may have a completly different oppinion.
*edit*
A.A. membership is, I believe, from £39 per year and European Cover £75 per year.

I am with the AA. Fully covered costs just over £100 for my wife and I on our 2 cars. Cannot fault their response times on the occasions I have had to call them.
