Although I am not overtly fond of the XD, and HATE the Sigma (a worthless piece of JUNK), it HAS to be the better choice over the Sigma, the first Glock 'rip-off', which has always had an unresolved bad rep of chronic feed & function problems, above & beyond their original legal problems over alleged industrial espionage concerning design with Glock.
Even tho I have owned several Glocks (and still keep a G-17 as a second weapon) I will stick to my tried & true H-K USP .45ACP. My USP has NEVER malfunctioned in over 5000 rounds, including most popular factory combat loads, as well as a mixed bag of custom reloads.

The Springfield XD is far better than the Sigma. I have three XD's and they have never failed me. The Sigma has been a disappointment. The S&W M&P is a much better design and is well built. I have tested the M&P but I don't yet own one.
Forget Sigma and buy the XD. If your mind is set on S&W then get the M&P.

I would go with the Springfield Armory XD, i have an XD 40 and it has had hundreds of rounds put through it. It's the best handgun i've ever had and i own several of them. I've never owned a Sig before, i've heard too many bad things about them to ever be interested. The XD is the only Handgun to consistently make it through the Glock test, the Glocks don't even consistently make it through it. The XD is very easy to take apart and put back together for cleaning. It shoots very nice. Comes with a hard case, cleaning brush and extra rounds. It comes in 9mm, .40, .357 and .45. If i where you i would defiently go with the XD, it has a very good reputation.

I'd definitely go for the XD. The S&W automatics haven't been very good. They make great revolvers, and that's where they should do, make revolvers. Springfield, on the other hand, makes very good automatics, and if you're going to get a modern .45, an XD would be a great choice. It's also great in other calibers, as well.
There's also a higher level of aftermarket support for the XD, and it's more popular, parts will be more common, and more people will know how to fix it and improve it.
The only thing I have to say good about the S&W is that the slide has more of a groove than a Glock does, and should be more durable, but seriously, what doesn't?

STAY AWAY FROM THE S&W AUTOS....lol....
My first handgun was a Sigma and the only thing it did faithfully was jam. Failure to feed and failure to extract.
I own two XDs. One is a 9mm ported model and the other is the .45ACP 5" Tactical. I recommend the XD.
Comparing the two:
XD has safeties and the Sigma does not. XDs come with holster, speed loader, and mag pouch. Extra mags are also only 25.00 at least where I buy them. There are better options for other holsters later on as well with the XD. I bought a BlackHawk CQC w/ Serpa lock.
The XD has a better natural aim to it. A little heavier so recoil is a little less.
I hope that helps...good luck and safe shooting

Can't recommend the Sigma as I had such a bad experience with a first generation Sigma 9mm. I hear they're good now, but once burned it is hard to go back so I can't recommend the Sigma at all. Which, from the choices you are asking about, only the Springfield remains. Any reason why you're not asking about a Glock? This is the one I'd recommend.
Best.

I once owned the first Sigma available in 9mmKurz ( 380 ) caliber. Even in that dinky caliber it was hard to control because it was so lightweight and too small for my hands. Give me a full size grip any day.

Simply on the basis of resale or trade up value, go with the XD.
S&W semis have a horrible reputation, deserved but not always merited for all models, but the used value of a Smith will always lose you most of your investment.

As much as S&W hypes their pistols, there seem to be a number of problems with them judging from what I read on Yahoo answers. S&W, I believe is not all that good anymore. They are strictly riding on past glory.
